Makeup Revolution Liquid Highlighter [Ethereal] Review
By Maychiri's Thoughts - March 15, 2023
And now, to finish it off, let’s move on to the third item
from the Notino Revolution Mystery Bag (2022), the Makeup Revolution Liquid
Highlighter, shade Ethereal.
I normally never use liquid highlighters. I tried to use one
and the results were, well, suboptimal let’s just say. I figured that my skin
is too oily for liquid products and have been using powder highlighter to this
day. So when I saw this thing in the bag I felt kinda disappointed, like, what do I do with this? But maybe I am wrong, and too narrow-minded. Maybe liquid
highlighters can actually work on my skin. This highlighter had three shades to
choose from: gold, greenish silver, and this light lavender. Now that I see all
3 I am so glad I got this shade in particular! So, will this liquid highlighter
be the one to finally change my opinion? Could it possibly be that good? Well,
let’s see, shall we?
Packaging: it’s extremely simple and basic. Just a plastic
bottle with a dropper that’s rose gold and black. To make things more
interesting the bottle is made of reflective material. The text is black, but,
since the entire bottle is reflective, that makes it a bit difficult to read
the text. I really like that they made the colour of the bottle match the
colour of the highlighter inside!
Ingredients: nothing nourishing. Hey look! Propylparaben!
Not that that’s good, mind you. Exactly 10 ingredients in this highlighter, not
counting the dyes used to get this exact colour. Nice! The smaller the
ingredients list, the lesser the chance that you might get an adverse reaction
to a certain ingredient. The scent is relatively intense and it is not at all
pleasant. It smells rubbery and literally like cheap plastic. Now, whether this
is its true scent or whether it smells like this because it was made flipping 5
years ago, I couldn’t tell you. All I know is that I don’t like it. At least
it’s not noticeable on the skin. The expiration date is 12 months after opening.
However, the batch code reveals that this particular highlighter was
manufactured in November of... 2017! So this means that I got a 5 year old
highlighter, which isn’t good at all. Indeed, you will see the effects of it
being so old in the following segments.
The dropper seems to be pretty good. Or at least it would be
good if this was a fresh batch. Nevertheless, it still managed to pump out what
little highlighter it could get.
Colour: this highlighter has got such an awesome colour!
It’s an icy, very light lavender with an almost bluish shine. Such a cold,
ethereal colour! Perfect for winter! And also perfect for very pale skin! I
usually prefer more ‘natural’ colours such as light gold, champagne, or beige,
but this is just a phenomenal colour to switch things up every now and then.
The formula of this highlighter is just sublime! It’s
totally creamy and soft and so easy to blend and buff into the skin! It is
fairly heavy compared to your traditional powder highlighter, but it’s actually
surprisingly light on skin. And since it’s so creamy, it is extremely easy to
blend! I tried to blend it with my fingers, that went exceptionally well, and
was as easy as could be. Then I tried to blend it with a very hard, dense brush
(hello Ecotools!), and that was, perhaps, an even better way to do it!
Just tap
it gently in various directions and it will be perfectly blended out in no
time! So even though I am not too skilled at using liquid highlighters I was
able to get perfectly highlighted cheekbones with little effort! Amazing! Perhaps
it works this well due to the fact that my skin is oily and can absorb a lot of
liquids; dry skin might find it to be too heavy, like it sits on the skin. See,
this is all a miracle, that it is still so creamy and blendable, because it’s
become all goopy and thick inside the bottle. I can barely manage to get it in
the dropper because it’s obviously separated into different parts of the
bottle, unreachable by the dropper.
That is what I was talking about when I
said that the ancient manufacture date is going to affect the highlighter
negatively. I am sure, 100%, that it wouldn’t be this thick and goopy inside
the bottle if it were a fresh batch. Shame!
Pigmentation is well, to say extreme would be an
understatement! I applied just one small drop to each cheekbone and one even
smaller droplet to my nose tip, and boy, even that was too much! At first it
seemed like it would be a good amount but as soon as I blended it out my jaw
literally fell to the floor! I was left shocked by how luminous and incredibly
intense this highlighter is, like, I literally said to myself “Oh boy! This is
bright! Well, crap!” (the shock was real)! My skin was literally shining! Beaming!
The texture is metallic, with no visible shimmer, just an extremely intense metallic
shine.
Despite being so metallic, it does not actually make the skin look more
textured, as it blends with the natural texture of the skin perfectly, without
looking like it’s sitting on top of it. It’s absolutely brilliant, in all
meanings of that word. Just be veeeery careful how much you apply, it’s
stupidly easy to go overboard and make yourself glow like a disco ball. As long
as you apply just a tiny bit it will be gorgeous! Just do be warned, there is
no building up of the intensity, what you see is what you get, so I really do
mean, be careful how much you apply! There’s either no highlighter or extremely
high shine with this one, nothing in between!
Comfort: light as a feather, in spite of the thick, creamy
formula. You might think that such a creamy formula would be uncomfortable or
even greasy, but it’s not. I couldn’t even feel it on my skin from how light it
is! It also doesn’t cause any irritations, despite being expired.

Here's an extra swatch on my hand because why not |
This highlighter has extraordinary longevity! My skin is
oily, so it tends to smudge most highlighters and make them less shiny;
however, this highlighter isn’t powdery, it’s a liquid highlighter, which
changes things drastically! Even 7 hours in, it looks just the same as when I
applied it, just as extremely shiny and bright. The texture stays the same,
too; it doesn’t crease, or crack or look patchy or anything. It’s just as
silky! Seriously, the longevity is impeccable! This is definitely the most
durable highlighter, by a country mile! Fascinating!
Removal: it’s super easy to remove, especially with gel
cleansers! You don’t need to rub a lot at all and there is no residual shimmer.
And no stains, either!
All in all, given how it seems like it’s gone off, I didn’t
have any expectations, especially since the last liquid highlighter I tried to
use was not terribly good. So I always tend to ignore liquid highlighters,
thinking that my skin is too oily for them and that they will separate after a
while and start to crack because of all the sebum. But this highlighter is
proving me so wrong and that is utterly fabulous! It’s got it all, really! The
pigment is hella intense, like you really, really need to be careful how much
you apply as even a single droplet is way more than enough to make you look
beaming. It’s super easy to apply, be it with fingers or with a very dense
brush (finally a use for the Ecotools All Eyes On Me set!), as it blends
gorgeously into the skin almost instantly. It’s also so light that you can’t
even feel it on your skin, and, by far the best of it all, it is impossibly
long-lasting! Like, even after 7 hours and a workout session, it is in exactly
the same shape as when I first applied it! I am still glowing like a light
bulb, despite all the sebum that had already broken out by that point! And it’s
easy to remove, too! Oh, and look at that gorgeous, ghostly lilac colour! It’s
so fab! Like, I cannot find a single bad thing to say, and I went in thinking
that it would be mediocre to maybe okayish. Instead, it is bloody fantastic!
Such a shame that is obviously expired, I would love to use it! Absolutely
recommend it!
