Catrice Liquid Shadow Waterproof [050 - Free Spirit] Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - March 22, 2023

And now, the second, and last review for today: the Catrice Liquid Shadow Waterproof, shade 050/Free Spirit.

I actually didn’t even know that Catrice had this! I only noticed it because it was 50% off due to being discontinued. I don’t usually use liquid eyeshadows because my eyelids are too oily and cause most products to crease like mad, especially liquid products. But at 50% off I thought: “Ah sure, might as well try it”, and so I bought this neat colour. Here’s hoping it’s actually good!

Packaging: a simple clear plastic bottle with a black cap. I like the black text and, especially, the black banding, I think it’s  very classy looking! The cap closes very tightly, no need to worry about it spilling! Since the bottle is clear, you can see the colour of the eyeshadow so that you can swatch it without opening it. It’s a simple, but very sleek design; I love it!

Ingredients: rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) leaf extract, glycerine for nourishment. No parabens. The scent is gentle, subtle and rather relaxing. It smells slightly chemical, metallic, but it also slightly reminds me of rosemary. The expiration date is sadly only 6 months after opening.

Colour: this is a very pretty neutral rosy brown. Like a brown with silverish and rosy undertones. The shimmer is mostly rosy. It’s a stunning colour, though I do think it would look better on slightly darker skin. It’s the perfect colour to use when you don’t know what to wear as this goes with pretty much anything.

The texture is very shimmery and metallic. Indeed, Catrice advertise it as a metallic eyeshadow. I love this finish, it’s so sparkly and shiny while still being appropriate for everyday use! It’s so beautiful!

The formula is heavenly smooth and creamy, as it glides across the eyelids like butter! It's also the perfect consistency, not too thick nor too thin. That is so wonderful! It also sets quite fast; so fast in fact, that you can't apply it on both eyes at the same time. If you do, it will set on one of them and be impossible to blend out. However, it is pretty easy to blend while it is still setting

The formula is extremely lightweight after it sets; at first it feels a bit constricting and tacky, but since it sets so quickly, it doesn’t take long for it to become virtually weightless and completely non-tacky. It’s a ridiculously comfortable formula to wear for hours!

That said, it is difficult to get it to be even. It’s definitely best to blend it using your fingers. Even if you are blending it while it’s still setting it’s easy to over-blend it, and applying a new coat just creates more problems so it’s really not a solution. So you’d better get it right the first time, or it’ll be really annoying to fix. So it just ends up looking kind of sloppy most of the time. This left me feeling really disappointed!

There is creasing as soon as the eyeshadow sets, unfortunately. Fortunately, this is a very subtle colour so the creasing isn’t very noticeable. I kept my eyes closed while it was setting and it still creased immediately; of course, using a good primer will prevent this from happening. This eyeshadow is definitely very long-lasting: it doesn’t really look at all different 8 hours later, there’s no fading, no transfer of shimmer, but it did crease a bit more. Thank heavens that it’s such a neutral colour!

It’s resistant to sweat, tears, touching, even water! If it weren’t for the creasing I would be in love with it.

This eyeshadow is extremely easy to remove with specialised cleansers. It’s only slightly less easy to remove with micellar water. It doesn’t require a lot of rubbing to remove, which us good for those of us with sensitive eyes. There is only a tiny bit of residual shimmer, which is good, considering how much shimmer there is in this eyeshadow.

Applicator: this is a flat applicator. It picks up a good amount of eyeshadow, more than enough for one eye, and the large size helps with that. Since it’s flat, and the tip is pretty precise, it’s extraordinarily simple to apply eyeshadow just the way you want it. It’s not made for blending, you’ll have to use your fingers for that! Besides that, it’s so very soft and gentle on the skin! It’s so comfy and pleasant to use!

In conclusion, I was so hyped to finally try this eyeshadow! The colour is so lovely and subtle and just so shiny and sparkly! I love the shimmery metallic texture! The applicator is very good and can be used to precisely apply eyeshadow exactly where you want it; it is also super soft and picks up a lot of eyeshadow. The formula is incredibly creamy and easy to spread across lids and it lasts for ages! Actually, it pretty much stays in place after it sets! Now this is all great, but there are some fairly substantial flaws with this eyeshadow, too. The formula is finicky; it sets way too quickly, making it very difficult to actually blend it properly. And it is so difficult to actually make it even on both eyes, especially without a primer underneath. It also creases pretty much immediately, even if you’ve been keeping your eyes closed while it sets. I had to spend a pretty long time trying to get it to look even. This all made me feel really disappointed, even sad. I really wanted it to be fantastic, as it would be a great product to use when you are in a hurry, I thought I could just swipe it on, blend it a bit with my fingers and that’s it, but it sadly isn’t that simple. I struggle to get it to look even, so I end up spending more time on it than with powder eyeshadows. And it, of course, creases on my oily eyelids. This is all such a shame, truly! I, regrettably, won’t be recommending it, no matter how much I wanted to love it.
