Trend it Up Super Shine & Stay Nail Polish [720] Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - February 10, 2024

Another nail polish, and another nice nude colour, to boot! This time, it’s the Trend it Up Super Shine & Stay Nail Polish, in the shade 720!

Surprise – this nail polish was a present! DM has these live shows that always have some sort of a coupon; sometimes it is a 1+1 free coupon, other times it is a coupon to get a huge amount of extra points on their loyalty card. But sometimes – not very often – they’ll have a coupon for a free product! This was such an occasion. You could choose any Super Shine & Stay and get it for free; I chose this colour because of a few reasons. First, most of the other colours were too bright or too red/orange or too dark for me. I wanted something subtle, and since I already bought a slightly darker nude colour from this range, I figured I might go the opposite way and get one of the lightest nude colours! Makes sense? I also kinda liked how it looked slightly yellowish in the photos, like real beige. I may not have planned to get another Super Shine & Stay; it may have been a bit forced, but who doesn’t like freebies?? I’m sure it’ll look nice on nails, but how good is it? Particularly after the other Super Shine & Stay nail polishes that had some serious problems... maybe this one won’t have them? Let’s see!

Packaging: rectangular tall glass bottle. Not much in terms of decorations, just the Trend it Up and Super Shine & Stay logos. This time, unlike with shade 795, the text is black! This is good attention to detail as there are so many nail polishes where all colours in a particular range have the same colour for text, so with some colours it inevitably becomes illegible. They made sure to put black text with a very light colour, as the white text would be very hard to read indeed. The cap is black and quite tall. It closes super tightly, as evident by the fact that I had to use plenty of force to open it initially. Simple design, but it is good enough in my book.

Ingredients: vitamin E for nourishment. There’s also zinc sulfate that should help make your nails stronger. Also, also, Lithothamnion calcareum extract and diatomaceous earth, which will never stop being fascinating to me to find in nail polishes! 3-free (DBP, formaldehyde, toluene). The scent is, once again, like melted plastic. Ugh... it’s horrible. Very acrid and intense and just way more unpleasant than that typical nail polish scent. Now I for sure know that this is how the Super Shine & Stay nail polishes should smell like, as every single one that I have smells like melted/burnt plastic. I don’t have to worry that they have expired, for some reason they decided that, yeah, this scent is good, so let’s leave it like this. I don’t get it... anyways, the expiration date is 24 months after opening.

This is a flat brush that is pretty wide and not too short. Good shape and seems to be in better quality than what the other Super Shine & Stay polishes had; no fraying or any other sign of bad quality. This brush picks up a ton of pigment – trust me, you could paint one whole hand with how much it picks up – and it spreads the polish very evenly and precisely. It’s much more precise than its brethren, so it’s easier to paint the sides of nails without making too much of a mess. I quite like this brush!

Colour: hmm, this is a very light beige, with mostly neutral to slightly peachy undertones. It’s almost the same colour as my skin, so this is most definitely a nude colour on me. I like how it’s almost the same as my skin, although I can see how it might also look anaemic on me. Honestly, this light beige reminds me of either pancake batter or cookie dough! That’s yummy! I feel like this colour would look better on slightly darker skin, but it’s still great on pale skin such as mine. Because it is so neutral, it goes with everything, so it’s good for formal or casual occasions alike. Super versatile colour!

The formula is pretty thin and feels watery, but it isn’t runny at all. It’s super easy to use, though, and there is some slight gelliness to it. It’s still much too thin for me, I’d prefer if it were just a tad thicker. It’s not the worst formula ever I guess.

One coat is pretty much opaque, depending on how thick of a layer you painted, though even a very thin coat looks almost opaque. It’s almost perfectly even with one coat, so you could leave it like this, but the colour isn’t as intense as it should be. With two coats the colour finally looks like it should, intense and bright. It looks rich but not at all thick. It’s perfectly even and looks pretty good, so far. The texture is, as the name implies, super glossy.

Here’s a quick prediction: this polish will be all scratched up to bits when I wake up. The other Super Shine & Stay polishes were like this, so it would make sense that this one would be like this, as well. And... yup, I was completely right! It does indeed get scratched to bits within the first 24 hours. Just like the others in this range. I wouldn’t say that it’s any more scratched up compared to the others, there’s just as many small and larger, deep scratches all over. After wearing it for 5 days, there was more chipping than with other Super Shine & Stay polishes, but I was doing more manual labour than before.

In particular, I had to install a piece of hardware inside my PC which required me to mess with all the cabling, and since my case is metallic (steel) instead of plastic, I ended up getting a few smaller chips (and an injured cuticle!) in the end. Honestly, I was expecting it to be much more ruined – this light damage is frankly astounding! A hair wash caused just a tiny bit of chipping on one or two nails, but since they’ve already been damaged by poking inside my computer, I will assume that this is the cause of this chipping. Besides, the chipping isn’t very visible because the colour matches my skin so closely, so it doesn’t look horrible once it starts to chip. I would say that this shade has pretty much the same level of longevity as the others, but it’s hard to be 100% certain as I did not work with my computer with the others.

While it may take some time to break through the top layer of this nail polish, after that it is super easy to remove, with not a whole lot of rubbing necessary in order to fully remove it. It did not leave any stains – in fact, my nails seemed to be slightly whiter than before! Hmm...

All in all, eh, pretty much the same as all the other Super Shine & Stay nail polishes. Meaning, it’s got a ton of potential that is hindered by how awfully it gets scratched up. Credit where it’s due, the brush is much better than what the other shades had. The formula is a bit weird, it is certainly thin and watery but it isn’t runny, and somehow still feels a bit gelly. It’s much too thin for me, but at least it’s easy to use! The (flat) brush is able to apply nail polish evenly and richly, and since it isn’t frayed, painting the sides of the nails cleanly isn’t difficult. Now, this is all good, yes, but there’s a giant proverbial elephant in the room that I have been avoiding up till now. See, this nail polish is impossible to wear without a good top coat. Why? Well, because it becomes so full of scratches by the second day that it just looks horrible. It’s not just one or two scratches, it’s a goddamn million! Shallow, deep, small, large... all kinds of scratches. This ruins the finish, so it’s no longer “super shine” like the name implies. It’s a muted shine that shows all the thousands of scratches very clearly. Well, at least it isn’t prone to chipping easily, which is such a relief! This shade had noticeable more chipping than the other Super Shine & Stay nail polishes, but, then again, I was much busier with my hands while testing this nail polish. Namely, I had to hand wash a ton of clothes and, more importantly, install a piece of hardware inside my PC which necessitated a whole bunch of fiddling around with wires and metal. It was only natural that it would chip then, but it was actually not nearly as much as I thought it’d be! Even after a hair wash it still stayed in pretty good condition, everything considered! Again, it’s such a bloody shame that it gets so scratched up because it has great longevity and it’s just a very pretty colour; I mean, look at it! It looks like cookie dough! So yummy! If only it didn’t look like I got into fisticuffs with a lion... sigh. Oh well, at least now I know that most likely all Super Shine & Stay polishes have the same problem, including this lovely light beige one. Too bad. So, no, this nail polish will not be getting any recommendations, the scratches are too huge of a problem.
