Couleur Caramel Eye Shadow [123 - Baby Doll Pink] Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - February 02, 2024

One eyeshadow to go alongside the colourful eyeshadow brush. This is the Couleur Caramel Eye Shadow, in the shade 123/Baby Doll Pink!

I’m not too big on ‘natural’ makeup... I have never heard of Couleur Caramel. Apparently, they’re French (duh!) and have existed as a company since 2003. Müller had a Couleur Caramel display for some time before they decided to remove it. Since it was only available at the larger Müller stores (that I don’t frequent as often as my local, smaller one), and since I don’t usually pay much attention to the ‘natural’ cosmetics aisle I completely missed this brand. It was pure luck that I happened to be at a larger Müller right when they were getting rid of the brand. It looks like it’s an expensive brand so I wouldn’t look at the display... were it not 50% off! But wait... it gets even better! This eyeshadow was one of the very last products that remained so its price was additionally slashed, to an incredible 82% off! Now, I didn’t know what to pick so I settled on a simple eyeshadow. An eyeshadow refill, to be fair, which meant that I had to find some empty palette to put it in. I may have some doubts regarding natural makeup, but maybe this eyeshadow will be a good one... let’s see!

Packaging: since this is a refill eyeshadow, it comes in a temporary cardboard packaging that keeps it secure. It looks fancy, ngl. I love the ginkgo leaves, very cool detail! All the information is in the back. There is a little window in the front that allows you to see the colour of the eyeshadow but you cannot touch it because there’s a plastic film over that window. Good hygiene! The packaging closes via an elastic band that you slide over it.

Simple, and not at all tamper-proof but quite natural. You know what else is natural-looking? The handle made of rope! It’s an awesome detail, although I don’t know why you’d need it since this packaging is already quite small. Inside you’ll find the eyeshadow pan. It’s really buried inside so that it doesn’t fall out accidentally. The pan itself is really nothing special, just you classic eyeshadow pan for putting in empty palettes. It’s made of metal so that it can be put in magnetic palettes. The design as a whole is very rustic and cottagecore, I like it! Although I did eventually throw away the outer packaging and put the pan in an empty magnetic palette. That just makes more sense.

Ingredients: squalane, vitamin E, apricot (Prunus armeniaca) kernel oil, avocado (Persea gratissima) oil, macadamia (Macadamia ternifolia) seed oil, shea (Butyrospermum parkii) butter, Indian beech (Pongamia glabra) seed oil. No parabens. Woah – that is a lot of oils! Hope they don’t separate since there aren’t many emulsifiers in the eyeshadow. The scent is barely noticeable, maybe a bit powdery. The expiration date is 10 months after opening (what kind of PAO is 10 months???).

The colour is interesting. The name would imply that this should be a very light pastel pink, right? Like what baby doll pink is. But this isn’t really pink, per se. This is absolutely peachy, not pink in any way. Like, am I colour-blind or is this literally light peach?? To me it looks like it. Maybe it’s just the way it interacts with my neutral-undertone skin but idk, this ain’t pink, chief. In any case, it’s a pretty bright, albeit very light colour that is pretty good for summer. I actually like that it’s peachy, I like the way it looks on me.

It may wash me out slightly when worn solo, but it’s a good colour to use with other darker ones for a smokey eye. But not as a base colour because it’s visibly too peachy. Base colours should be mostly light beige for pale skin. The misleading name aside, this is actually a very bright, fun colour!

The pigmentation is not really all that good. I need 3-4 thick layers before I can actually see the eyeshadow on my eyelids. Even then, it’s not really too visible on me but that’s because this colour is very light and pretty close to the colour of my skin. If I apply 4-5 layers I can see it, as it’s pretty intensely pigmented then. But to need so many layers is not good.

The formula is definitely silky, oh yeah! It’s super silky but also powdery; it’s so extremely finely milled that it’s like the finest talcum powder. This is good because it sticks to skin due to having such tiny particles, but it also presents certain problems. Despite being made mostly of oils, it doesn’t feel creamy at all, so there’s basically nothing to hold the particles together. What I am saying is, there’s a horrendous amount of fall-out in the pan. Like, there’s more fall-out than what actually gets on the brush, which is ridiculous! But of course, if you put emulsifiers or thickeners in it then it’s no longer 100% natural... see what I mean when I say that I have certain doubts regarding natural makeup? Thankfully, there’s not a lot of fall-out while you are applying it to your eyelids.

Actually, there’s barely any. So that is good. That makes it super easy to use, as you can just swipe it on and it’ll be good. It’s also very easy to blend, even with fingers! So it’s really not hard to get it to look great. Even if it is barely visible. The texture is completely matte, so much that it almost starts to look dry. Also it looks very silky on the eyelids!

Given the extremely finely milled formula it is superbly lightweight and super comfortable to wear. I cannot feel it on my skin, even if I layer on like 7 layers. And it doesn’t cause any irritations, so it’s good for sensitive eyes.

But the longevity is... bad, let’s just say bad. While it doesn’t move around during the day and it doesn’t really fade, it creases like crazy! And it starts to crease legit 30 minutes after you apply it, especially if you have oily lids like I do. It’s definitely not meant for us oily folk. Its only saving grace is that the colour is so neutral, barely visible on me. That prevents the creasing from being too visible; of course, if you get up close, you’ll see it plainly but at least it isn’t visible from afar. Still, this is horrible. It’s also not at all waterproof.

Remember how I said that it’s super easy to blend? Well, that same easy-to-blend formula makes this eyeshadow equally easy to remove. Just one swipe with micellar water and it’s completely gone.

In conclusion, hmm, yeah I’m not terribly too happy with this eyeshadow. Alright, yeah, the colour is quite fun and bright... once you layer on 5-6 layers! Because the pigmentation is very poor, you really need this many layers to get it to be visible, at least on pale skin such as mine. Maybe it’s more visible on darker skin. Although I really wouldn’t wear it alone, I feel like it washes me out even though it is a good fit to my skintone. I find that it looks so much better once you add an eyeliner or a dark eyeshadow to give it more dimension because it just looks flat worn solo. I believe that the ultra-matte finish adds to this flatness. Although I really like this finish, as someone who is naturally quite oily. Finally something that looks proper matte on me! And you know why it looks so silky and matte? It’s because the powder has been so finely milled that it’s finer than baby talcum powder! This allows the eyeshadow to have a lot of grip and it also makes it very easy to blend. So this is great, right? Well, yes, but here come more not-so-good things. See, the longevity sucks. It barely lasts half an hour before it starts to crease on me, which, yeah, I guess is my fault for not applying primer. But without primer it is horrible. It creases badly, like, there’s literally a millimetre thick line of demarcation! Fortunately, the colour is far too light on me  for the creasing to be very obvious. But it’s still there. Idk, I’m just not feeling this eyeshadow. And don’t get me started on the fact that this nowhere near “baby doll pink”! Like, this has nothing to do with pink – it’s literally light peach! Putting aside the fact that I actually really like this colour, it’s misleading to call it any sort of shade of pink. I’m glad I got it at a silly low price because I’d be furious if it was this mid and I paid a premium price. I think this is about what it should cost, it’s really not worth the original price. I’m not even surprised, though, as I never expected it to be a particularly great eyeshadow. Eh. Nope, no recommendations.
