Avon Nail Care Crystallised Ombre Nail File Review

And the last review, the Avon Nail Care Crystallised Ombre Nail File!

I am always looking for a good nail file that is gentle enough for my sensitive nails. This file was 70% off in the Avon Focus catalogue, so, naturally, it piqued my interest. I’ve never used a glass file before, but it definitely looks interesting and like it might be better for my nails. Let’s see if I am right!

Packaging: this nail file comes in a plastic case that keeps it safe from falls and hygienic. The case can be a bit fiddly to open sometimes, especially if your nails are very short. It closes securely, making a nice click when it does. It’s also clear, so that you can see the gorgeous file inside it.

As for the file itself, it has a black ombre effect going from the handle towards the tip. That is really gorgeous! The rest of the file is clear and a bit translucent, like frosted glass. The shape of the file is a classic pointed shape, but it is sharply pointed. Be careful; it really is sharp! It looks way more expensive than what it was, really! It is made if 100% acrylic.

This file has a very low grit, as it is very coarse and sharp. It shortens nails effectively, seemingly without causing any splitting, but it’s no good for fine work such as polishing or softening of the edges. It seems like it’s way less than 180 grit as it is quite uncomfortable to use on my (natural) nails. It’s just way too coarse and it feels like I am damaging the nails

Glass nail files should be better (and gentler) on the nails than emery boards, smoothing out the edges of nails instead of causing microscopic splitting, but I don’t see how this one can be that when it’s so low-grit. The free edges of my nails seemed to be slightly smoother but they were also rough at the same time, like they didn’t enjoy being treated with something so sharp and rough. It would definitely work better on acrylic nails or gel nails.

It’s super easy to maintain as you can just dip it in hot water and wash it with hand soap or shampoo. It is also recommended to boil it for a few minutes every once in a while, to completely sanitise it. Since it is glass, I expect it to last a very long time, much longer than any buffer block.

All in all, alas, my dreams of having a fantastic glass nail file are gone! Even though this nail file is a real stunner in terms of looks, it is much too coarse for my nails. It shortens my nails easily, seemingly at the cost of the health of the nail. Even though it is supposed to close the keratin on the free edge, preventing splitting, for me it didn’t look like it did that. It just seemed to damage my poor nail. It must be made for gel/acrylic nails. I think I will just stick to nail buffer blocks for now. My search for a good glass nail file will have to continue, it seems. No recommendations, at least not for natural nails.
