Clueless X Makeup Revolution Lip Liner [Cher] Review
By Maychiri's Thoughts - June 07, 2023
One of the three special LE items, and the first lip
product: Clueless X Makeup Revolution Lip Liner, shade Cher!
Revolution had the most ingenious collab not too long ago: a
limited edition set of makeup inspired by the film Clueless! So, yeah, Clueless
is a film I remember watching when I was a kid and it totally had an impact on
my fashion even now. I watched it again recently and remembered just how
awesome it is! Especially the clothes, omg (Cher's yellow plaid outfit,
anyone?)! Everything is fashionable even for today's standards! Now, I am a
sucker for cute things, and when I saw a lip liner with, get this, a big
fluffy pom-pom on one end, I knew I had to buy it! Like, what’s mire adorable
than that?? And it’s totally 90's! Out of the 3 shades Revolution had in this
mini LE, I picked Cher (both for the liner and the gloss) because she is my
favourite character in the film. Her quotes are iconic, like the one Rev
singled out: “Anything you can do to draw attention to your mouth is good
(...)”. I totally agree! Now that I have the matched liner & gloss set, I
hope I can be real Betty, like Cher Horowitz! Let’s see how good this adorbs
liner is!
Packaging: the pencil came in a perfectly Clueless inspired
plastic bag with a yellow plaid pattern. Just like Cher’s famous outfit form
the film! I love the attention to detail here! The pencil itself is very light
pink, although, as you’ll see later, this isn’t the real colour of the pencil! This
took me by surprise. Anyways, the pink is utterly adorable, but you know what’s
even more adorable? The big fluffy pom-pom! Just look at it! It is super sized
so that you can tickle your nose while thinking about stuff – or daydreaming!
It’s super soft and fluffy and just perfect! And the perfect shade of pink,
too! Perfectly Barbie! I am glad that it doesn’t shed hairs too much, only a
little bit here and there. This would have been a real show-stopper back in
high school!
The cap fits extremely tightly, so much that I sometimes can
barely open it! Good for a pencil with such a short PAO! All in all, a
perfectly adorable design! I adore it!
Ingredients: vitamin E for nourishment. No parabens. The
scent is not too intense; it smells waxy and slightly soapy, but mostly like
any wooden pencil lip liner. The expiration date is only 6 months after
opening.
The colour of this lip liner is quite peculiar! It’s
supposed to be pastel pink, but on my lips it is pastel... lilac? It’s
definitely not pink, that much is certain, unless I am really colour blind. It’s
like, pale light lilac. Or pale lavender. Definitely not what I was expecting,
and I am not sure I even like it. It’s dated and washes out my skintone, making
me look even paler than usual. Also, this particular shade of lilac makes my
teeth look so yellow! Not a fan! But there’s also something in it that is nice,
that is pretty. Idk, I have a real hot-cold relationship with this lip liner.
And it’s not really a 90’s shade, either; this is much more early 00’s (like
2004). Although, one thing I like about this colour is that it makes my lips
look visually bigger, because it is lighter than my skintone. But if it’s
lighter than my skin, and therefore washes me out, just imagine how
ridiculous it would look on darker skin! So bizarre!
However, as weird as the colour is, the pigmentation is
through the roof! Like, even the slightest touch gives you maximum
pigmentation! Incredible! One layer is really all that you need to get vibrantly
pale lilac lips. And that makes the application so simple and easy... I’ll get
to that in a moment. And since this is a classic wooden pencil, if you sharpen
it, it is extremely precise.
The formula is powdery dry. However, it is also creamy enough
to glide across the lips without a lot of pulling. In fact, the first layer
goes on without any tugging, it’s only when you add additional layers does it
start to pull at the lips. Because it is actually rather soft and it’s
absolutely loaded with pigments, it only takes seconds to both line and fill in
the lips. There is absolutely no smudging or feathering; the line is as sharp
as a blade! It was really fun to use this lip liner to fill in my lips, as it
immediately ends up being 100% even and rich. Even when I went to add a bit
more to the centre of the lips, it did not tug at the skin; I literally cannot
believe how good this formula is to use! It’s such a joy!
The texture is totally ultra-matte. There is not even a
trace of any shine. But it doesn’t look very dry; instead, it looks powdery and
smooth. I love this finish! It’s so fab! And best thing, it doesn’t even
exaggerate the fine lines of the lips! But it does have issues with not being
able to be applied to the inner centre of the lips, which might leave an
unsightly border. Nevertheless, it is a stunning finish, exactly the kind I
love! Now, if it looks powdery dry, then you won’t be surprised to hear that it
also feels powdery on lips. And a little bit tacky due to being so powdery. But
it’s not at all uncomfortable!
In fact, it is quite comfortable to wear! It
doesn’t become more tacky or drier over time, so you have this powdery dry
feeling on your lips, without actually drying them out. Even the centre of my
lower lip, which is prone to drying out, didn’t. Weird that such a powdery
formula doesn’t dry out at all but it’s wonderful!
Longevity is extremely good, like, for real. 7 hours
later it still looks almost the same, perhaps just a tiiiiny bit more cracked
on the lower lip. Although, if it is, it’s really minor. It still looks soft
and powdery, and there is not even a little bit of feathering or smudging or
any sign of wear and tear. Literally! The edges of lips are still razor sharp! It
also handles food very well! The only damage was on the inner centre of the
lips, and even there it wasn’t really bad. Greasy food may, however, damage it
more.
I would still advise fixing the damage after eating, even if it isn’t
bad. In any case, I am blown away by the longevity this lip liner has! I
thought it would for sure fade after eating, but here it is, still in mostly
excellent condition!

Worn with the Clueless X Makeup Revolution Lip Gloss [Cher] |
Now, after a whole day of wearing it, it is time to remove
the liner. Well, well, well, it comes off without any rubbing at all! If you
are using micellar water just press down on it and swipe and it’ll be gone in
an instant! And no stains either. The fact that you don’t need to rub to remove
the liner is great news for my sensitive lips. Superb!
Finally, a word or two about sharpening. This is a traditional
wooden pencil liner, which are usually easy to sharpen. Indeed, this pencil is
ridiculously easy to sharpen, without the lead crumbling or breaking off. Just
a few turns in the ‘ol sharpener and you’re good to go!
All in all, I really didn’t think this lip liner would end
up being this good! I thought it would be nice, but it is so much more! The
formula is at the same time powdery and smooth, making for an easy application
without any tugging. It’s also super pigmented, and since this colour is so
bright, it looks even more pigmented! The liner has outstanding longevity, not
changing at all during 8 hours of wear, and food damages it only minimally. It’s
also extremely easy to remove! I love how it feels powdery but not drying on my
lips, and I adore the ultra-matte powdery finish! It’s so gorgeous! And unlike
many ultra-matte lip products, this one doesn’t exaggerate the fine lines of
the lips, preventing it from looking chapped on the lips. Oh and have you seen
the pencil itself?? It’s sooo totes adorable! Pom-pom! It’s sooo fluffy and
soft and I love to touch it and tickle my nose with it! Definitely the best
looking lip pencil that I have! No doubt! The only flaw, and it’s sadly not
something minor, is that the colour is totally different from what you’d expect
from both the exterior and the description of the pencil on Revolution’s own
site. They say that this is a pastel pink liner, which is corroborated by the
colour of the pencil, but the lead is actually pastel lilac, at least on my
lips. It’s definitely not pink at all, but purple. And this colour doesn’t
really mesh with my skin all too well, as it washes out my skin making me look
grayer and more tired. And it also really brings out the yellow in teeth. I was
really hoping for a pale pinky, super cute shade... sigh. I don’t hate this
colour, but it is radically different and forces me to lower the final grade,
no matter how much I wouldn’t want to do that. But if you have a pale lilac
that washes out even my pale skintone, imagine how bad it would look on darker
skin. Such a shame, and it was going so terrifically up till that point! I
guess there has to be something bad to balance out the awesome. In any case, I
would recommend this lip liner, it is stupidly good, like, it has no right
being this good, and it is currently marked down, too! Just be aware of the
mismatch of the colour of the exterior and the lead and the fact that it is in
fact an extremely light colour.
Rating: 8/10
Would buy again? Sadly, NO (the colour is way different to
what it was meant to be)
