Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer [78 - Royal] Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - February 01, 2022

Let’s go to the third item! This is Maybelline Color Sensational Vivid Hot Lacquer in shade 78/Royal

Honestly, this looked so cool on the display in Muller. There were other nice colours, including a bright orange red, but this was just so awesome, a deep royal purple. So, naturally, I just had to buy it, despite not being experienced with liquid lipsticks.

The packaging: elegant, clear plastic tube with black lettering and black cap. The cap forms a very good seal, so no chance of leaking. As you can see the colour, swatching without opening the product is possible. This might just be me, but I would prefer if Maybelline used some other colour for the text because the black text on the vivid purple is a bit hard to read.

Ingredients: in terms of nourishing ingredients there is vitamin E and collagen and, naturally, there are no parabens. The scent is similar to other Maybelline lip products: not too intense, somewhat sweet and a bit chemical-like. It’s not a bad scent, and I do like it. The expiration date is 24 months after opening.

Worn with NYX Suède Matte Lip Liner SMLL10/Amethyst

The pigmentation is truly intense and it's a deep purple colour. The formula is very thick and gel-like, but it still isn’t 100% opaque; it is still somewhat transparent so it would be better to use a liner under it to get full colour. Application is really simple and easy, just swipe and you’re done; it’s pretty even so no need to fidget with trying to put it on evenly.

Wearing just this liquid lipstick

The texture is glassy, high shine. Due to how thick the formula is, it feels heavy on the lips, like, you will definitely be aware of it on your lips. It is also tacky/sticky and it takes a while to dry so it’s not the most comfortable lipstick to wear.

Nonetheless, it is very long-lasting, and it does not dry out lips. So, that’s good. Sadly, it’s not food/drink/mask proof; it will transfer and fade during meals. In terms of removal, not easy; I have to really rub it to remove it, even with makeup removal oil (which removes other make up products with no issues). Moreover, it leaves a stain. And that stain is pretty intense and red and bloody difficult to remove. Nothing, not Vaseline, not removal oil, not olive oil, nothing completely removes it, I just had to suck up and try to ignore it. I know that purple pigments are known to stain the skin, but this stain is seriously difficult to remove. A huge negative point.

Let’s talk about the applicator, it’s a standard reservoir type applicator that’s soft and well-made. It picks up a lot of pigment and easily applies it across the entire surface of the lips. I was surprised by how good this applicator is!

To summarise: I really wanted to like this lipstick but it feeling so heavy and the hellish stain that it leaves make it impossible to actually enjoy it. Perhaps other, more natural shades wear better and perhaps they don’t leave this kind of stain. As it is, I rarely wear this lipstick because of the stain, which is a crying shame as it really looks awesome, at least to me, and beside those few negatives, it honestly isn’t such a bad lipstick. Still, I won't be giving it a recommendation, it's just too annoying in some aspects.
