Maybelline Color Sensational The Mattes Lipstick [886 - Berry Bossy] Review
By Maychiri's Thoughts - February 15, 2022
Now for the third item, the Maybelline Color Sensational The Mattes
Lipstick in the shade 886/Berry Bossy!
I would say that this, and the following two items were the
start of me browsing through and buying stuff that’s in the sale basket in DM.
I always like to check that part of the makeup section out, you never know, you
might find a hidden gem! Or something that’s well past its use by date and is
almost rancid. It’s a gamble!
Anyways, the packaging: I like it, it’s modern and simple,
just a blue plastic rectangular cap and a silver tube. It may not be the
prettiest packaging, but it is far from ugly, it’s just a different look. The
cap is semi-transparent. There is a sticker which matches the colour of the
lipstick bullet on the bottom so it’s easy to swatch it without opening the
tube.
The ingredients list includes sesame oil, honey and vitamin
E for nourishment; there are no parabens. The scent is your typical Maybelline
lip products one, sweet, somewhat intense. The scent reminds me of honey or cake.
It is a pretty delicious scent, in my personal opinion. The expiration date is
24 months after opening.
Wearing just this lipstick |
The pigmentation is seriously amazing, it’s so pigmented
that it might even be a bit too pigmented (more on that in a bit). In
any case, the colour is a beautiful dark berry shade, perfect for the colder
autumn or winter months.

The texture is ultra-matte, which might be an issue if you
are prone to having dry lips, as it will emphasise all the drier and more
cracked parts. Indeed, that is exactly what happened in the photos; even though
I regularly exfoliate my lips I still often get dry spots on them which then
makes truly matte lip products look a bit patchy or uneven. So, properly
exfoliated and nourished lips are a must for this lipstick. And it doesn’t just
look dry (like matte can look like oftentimes), it feels dry on the
lips. Not extremely dry, but still dry enough that I noticed it. And it doesn’t
stop there; the dryness of the matte finish does dry out your lips a little
bit, so be sure to apply a generous amount of chapstick after you remove this
lipstick!
To give it credit though, it is incredibly long-lasting and
food/drink-proof. In my experience I didn’t have to touch it up after eating
greasy food, which is amazing. Now, even though the staying power is so good,
it is still quite easy to remove; no need to tug at your lips or scrub too
hard. There is one negative though, and that is that it left a stain my lips
that, thankfully, wasn’t too severe so it didn’t take that much time to
try and scrub it.
To sum up: if you would like a statement, bold lipstick that
is perfect for the colder part of the year and you don’t have terribly dry lips
then this lipstick is the one for you. It honestly surprised me how dry it felt
given the nourishing ingredients Maybelline put in it. I thought that at least
honey would help relieve the dryness that is often a problem with matte
lipsticks. The other bad thing is the stain problem, I hate it when products
stain my skin. But the staying power and
pigmentation outweigh the negatives, at least in my humble opinion. As this is
one of the rarer lipsticks that I have that need absolutely no fixing post
meal. It’s a great lipstick, albeit with a few caveats. But it's just a tad too drying and looks a bit too dry, so I sadly won't recommend it.
