Max Factor Miracle Prep Pore Minimising + Mattifying Primer Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - February 15, 2022

Time for another set of reviews, starting with my favourite primer, Max Factor Miracle Prep Primer Pore Minimising + Mattifying

As the previous primer didn’t do its job at all it was time to find a replacement for it, and this one piqued my interest because it states that it has a “triple oil-absorbing powder complex” and that it is a lightweight formula, that also supposedly minimises the appearance of pores. This primer was also the first Max Factor product that I bought.

Packaging: simple, clean. It’s a purple and black plastic bottle that looks and feels quite expensive. The cap is clear and fits very tightly. The text is black, which makes it very easy to read against the purple.

Ingredients: no nourishing ingredients, also, no parabens, which is great! The scent isn’t too intense, but it is oddly metallic or plastic-y, definitely smells like chemicals. I honestly don’t mind this as the scent evaporates pretty much instantly once you start applying it. It also has SPF20, which is a fair amount for a primer. The expiration date is 24 months after opening.

This primer is white, but it becomes transparent on the skin. The formula is somewhat watery, quite thin. The pump is great; you can precisely squirt exactly the amount of primer you want; one full squirt is enough for my entire face usually. It is exceptionally easy to apply, and given it’s transparent, it blends extremely easily. Though, owing to its wet formula, it takes a while to dry; this is definitely not the fastest drying primer.

Left - Without primer; Right - With primer

To preface this, I naturally have enlarged pores, especially around my nose, and my skin is very oily and acne prone. Let’s start with the claim that it is mattifying. Indeed, it mattifies my skin really well and it reduces the amount of sebum my skin produces, which results in less oily-looking skin throughout the day. Secondly, is it pore-minimising? In my opinion, I think it is. The pores around my nose seem less noticeable and my skin in general looks smoother. How about the “lightweight formula” claim? Also true; I didn’t even notice that it’s on my skin, it really blends right in with the skin. I also feel like my skin is much softer after applying this primer, so, really it does everything it promises to do and then some!

In terms of staying power, it seems like it is pretty long-lasting, as the appearance of the foundation I am wearing on top of it doesn’t change even after more than 5 hours. Although it is quite difficult to really tell whether it has faded. It’s not at all drying even though it’s mattifying, but for people who have dry skin, their mileage may vary. Unsurprisingly, removing it is as easy as can be.

In short, this primer promises a lot of things, and it fulfills all of them. I can’t find a negative to this primer, to be honest. It’s a perfect base for foundations that is long-lasting, truly mattifying and visually makes pores smaller. No surprise then that it has become my favourite primer!
