Balea Pflegecreme You Are My Otter Half Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - March 09, 2025

The next review is Balea's cute little cream, the Pflegecreme You Are My Otter Half!

When I bought this cream, I was actually planning to buy the other one that DM had, the one with turtles, but they didn’t have it at any DM at the time. So I settled for this one, it’s cheap enough anyways, so why not buy it? And it is soo cute! Let’s see what it’s like!

Packaging: it’s just a round metal pan with nothing preventing people from opening it to smell it. All of these small creams by Balea have this type of packaging, and I don’t like it. It’s impossible to know whether the cream had already been tampered with, which will lead to it expiring sooner if somebody had already opened it. There’s just a thin piece of metal foil inside that really does nothing to prevent it from being opened and I can’t even know if it had been opened because the foil gets all bent anyways. The lid also doesn’t really close all that securely.

All of this might play a part in what I am going to say later. The best part of the packaging is definitely the picture on the lid. It’s the most adorable picture of two otters in love cuddling! They are definitely each others’ Otter halves!

Ingredients: glycerine, shea (Butyrospermum parkii) butter, coconut (Cocos nucifera) oil for nourishment. No parabens. The scent is, honestly, obnoxious, at least to me. While it does smell like coconut for the first like 5 seconds, it quickly changes into a very synthetic, industrial, greasy type of scent. It’s like paraffin, although others have tried to convince me that that’s what coconut actually smells like. It’s not that sweet, tropical coconut scent that it should be, but it’s also not rancid. It’s just very unpleasant and annoyingly intense. And it’s not the first time these little creams had a synthetic type of smell, though it was usually more chemical than greasy. And I hate how it stays until the morning on my skin! The expiration date isn’t listed as PAO, but as a real date.

This is a white cream that reminds me of Nivea Crème. The formula is smooth and creamy, but also incredibly greasy and heavy and thick. The greasiness makes it easy to spread on skin, but it does also feel slightly heavy. Not too heavy, but you definitely know it’s there. It absorbs rather quickly given the heavy, thick formula.

This isn’t the most comfortable formula to wear. The greasy, thick formula is just way too much for me. Perhaps someone with dry or very dry skin would like it more! I apply hand creams before going to bed, so that my hands absorb it fully. This cream is okay-ish in terms of hydration; it doesn’t really nourish or hydrate the skin all that much but it does hydrate it to a degree. It’s fine in my opinion.

This cream is very easy to wash off (thank god, because the scent is driving me insane!). It also does not cause any irritations.

In conclusion, I don’t really like this cream very much. Although it is kinda hydrating, and is very easy to apply, there’s so much more that annoys me. First and foremost, the scent. It is supposed to be a coconut scent, but it quickly becomes very unpleasant and industrial, like grease. And that scent lingers for hours! Besides that, it is incredibly greasy and thick. At least it is light on skin. And there’s the adorable otters, I guess! So, because of that awful scent this is the worst of the small Balea creams so far. I definitely won’t recommend it.
