Essie Summer 2024 Collection Nail Polish [966 - Breathe In Breathe Out] Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - October 17, 2024

Just one nail polish for today, but it’s a good one! This is the Essie Summer 2024 Collection Nail Polish, in the shade 966/Breathe In Breathe Out!

Another Essie... I can’t help myself when they’re always so good – and there is always at least one colour in each new collection that I fancy! For the summer 2024 collection, which was all about meditation and inner peace, the only colour that truly spoke to me was this violet one. I love yoga, so the name of this shade really tickled me! I am not usually one to wear such violet nails often, because I am worried about staining, but I had to have this one, the name was just too good! And besides, it looked like a nice muted violet, so I am sure it will look nice on my pale skin. Now, let’s breathe in... then breathe out... and now let’s see how good this Essie nail polish is! I hope it’s every bit as good as they’ve been thus far!

Packaging: classic Essie type of bottle; it is rectangular, and it feels sturdy. The text is white, to match the cap. I really like the use of white here, I feel like it goes really well with the violet colour! There is also one more detail that I love: there’s an Essie logo relief on both sides of the bottle, which makes it look so much more fancy! The cap is white and quite tall. It closes super tightly, so much that I sometimes struggle to open it! Very classy bottle, I love this design!

Ingredients: nothing nourishing and 3-free (DBP, formaldehyde, toluene). The scent is your typical nail polish kind of scent, nothing too special. The expiration date is 24 months after opening.

Colour: hmm, this colour reminds me of ORLY's Breathable nail polish, in the shade TLC, albeit, this one is more reddish compared to that one. Anyways, this is a “soft, dusty purple with white undertones”, according to Essie. I agree! Although, to me it looks more violet, quite like the Pantone colour “African violet”. In any case, it is definitely dusty, which gives it this sense of calm. It’s a relaxing colour for sure, perfect for doing soothing yoga exercises with! I really like this colour because it’s got a very good blend of red/blue pigments; it’s just a bit more reddish so it blends with many skintones better. It looks so flattering on pale skin! I was afraid that it might look a bit weird on me, but it actually looks so elegant and cool! Although, this is definitely a more wintery colour than a summery one. It’s too muted for the bright summer sun, no? Still, I love it nonetheless!

The brush is standard for Essie, which means: extremely good! This is the patented Essie ‘easy-glide’ brush that can be bent to almost 45 degrees, which allows it to reach every nook and cranny and apply nail polish perfectly. Indeed, it applies nail polish so well that I only needed 2-3 swipes until it was perfect! Just remember to tap off the excess because it picks up a huge amount of polish! But I am constantly amazed by how easy it is to paint my nails with Essie nail polishes, it’s so fun! Every swipe is even and coats the nail in just the right amount of nail polish, ensuring that you get salon-like results each time! As for the shape? It’s a long flat brush with rounded edges on the sides.

And another great thing about this nail polish is its formula: it is not at all runny, but it’s also not very thin. It’s not too thick, either. It feels luxurious and creamy and silky at the same time, without feeling goopy or gelly at any point. I love how easily it spreads across nails; I don’t even have to try to make it even, it will just spread perfectly on its own. I’ve always loved Essie’s formulas, and this one is another awesome one! It just feels luxurious and high-end, like it should!

One coat isn’t quite opaque. I can still see my nails underneath, but they aren’t very visible. Still, I feel like the colour isn’t quite as vibrant as it should be. But it’s completely even and feels very lightweight! Now, with two coats, it is completely opaque and still feels lightweight. It’s also perfectly even, not a single uneven patch to be found! I really wouldn’t advise applying more than 2 coats, though, it looks perfect with two. The colour is vibrant like it should be and it is even and opaque. With anything more it might start becoming goopy. The texture is glossy.

Longevity is quite excellent! But that is what I expect from an Essie, after all. It does not get scratched up easily, so it will keep that lovely high shine for days! Well, unless you obsessively use disinfectant and wash your hands tens of times in one day, like I did, while I was trying to prevent myself from catching Covid from my mother (I failed...). I noticed that the shine was more muted on the final day than when freshly applied, but it wasn’t covered in scratches, so it must have been the alcohol in the disinfectant that caused that. It wasn’t completely devoid of any gloss, mind you, so it still looked great on day 5. It started to chip on day 3, which is a bit too soon for an Essie, but I do have to remember that my nails were likely severely dehydrated from all the disinfectant use.

And the chips were barely visible anyways! It was just very minor edge chipping along the free edges of a couple of nails, in addition to a few very small chips on the corners of 3 nails. Really, if you didn’t look closely, you wouldn’t notice it. This is actually incredible longevity, given what I was doing to my hands! I am actually pretty satisfied with the longevity of this Essie, it can withstand rigorous hand washing without looking like a right mess on day 5! Nice!

I didn’t have any issues removing this nail polish; I didn’t need to rub my nails a lot in order to fully remove the nail polish. I was a bit worried that it would make my nails yellow, but it doesn’t discolour nails! Yay!

All in all, yep, another fantastic Essie nail polish... no surprise! See, this is exactly why I keep buying new shades as they come out, I know I can count on Essie to be there for me and not chip no matter what I do! I didn’t have to do a lot of ‘sol searching’ to find the right colour in this collection, I knew right away that this colour would be the best one for me! And I was right – look how awesome it looks on pale skin! It really pops, but it isn’t extremely vibrant, it’s just a gentle wash of colour that is truly soothing to look at. Essie describe it as being a purple shade, but to me this is definitely a violet colour, specifically, an African violet kind of colour. It’s a fantastic colour, but it’s not really summery to me. It’s a much more fall and winter type of colour. Still, I love it! And the formula is the same awesome formula that makes Essies so great; it’s super silky and incredibly easy to use because it applies evenly without even trying! The brush helps immensely with this: this is a large flat brush that picks up a ton of pigment and spreads it perfectly evenly across the nails, to ensure you get salon-like results every time. Seriously, it’s so fun to use! Of course, to get to 100% opacity, you will need 2 coats, but since it’s so fun and easy to use, this isn’t a problem. And once you do apply 2 coats, man does it look incredible! So rich in colour and so glossy! But the fun doesn’t stop here, nope! Like all the previous Essies I used, this one, too, has outstanding longevity! It doesn’t get covered in scratches easily, and it takes a lot to get it to chip – and I mean this! Since applying it, I have found out that I got Covid again, and with that came a lot of disinfecting my hands. This is not easy on nail polishes, and it takes a special kind of robust formula to be able to survive this – and this nail polish survived! Not completely unscathed, there was edge chipping along most nails, and there were a few bigger chips after a hair wash, but just the fact that it survived this long in this good of a condition is remarkable! 5 days of intense hand washing and disinfecting (and a hair wash) and yet it looked almost intact from a distance. This makes me love this nail polish even more, even though the longevity is, objectively, slightly worse than the previous Essies. Because, while I was battling the virus, having a high fever and coughing up my lungs out, at least I had this gorgeous nail polish on my nails to brighten my day. And to soothe me with this calming colour. So, all that’s left is for me to give this nail polish my recommendation, because it has really earned it! Ah, now I can breathe out deeply, knowing that Essie nail polishes are still just as awesome as ever!
