Trend it Up 1 Water Based Nail Color [620] Review
By Maychiri's Thoughts - November 08, 2024
Oh man, let’s check this out I guess... this is the Trend it
Up 1 Water Based Nail Color, in the shade 620!
Okay, let me be perfectly honest, curiosity got the better
of me. I really did not plan to buy this originally, but the fact that it’s a
water-based nail polish was too intriguing to ignore. Like, wouldn’t it have
poorer longevity than “normal” nail polishes? My understanding is that these
types of polishes use water as a solvent instead of acetone, so when you paint
your nails the water evaporates, which is when the nail polish should be dry. Sounds
intriguing... but if it doesn’t have acetone or anything acetate-based, how
should a “normal” remover remove it?? Hmm, that’s a future me problem. This was pretty
much the only colour I fancied, all the others were far too bright and red. So,
let’s see how good this alternative type of nail polish is!
Packaging: typical Trend it Up bottle; it’s tall and
rectangular and feels relatively heavy. The text is black, which is a good
choice with such a light colour. There’s a little water droplet design so that
you know that this is, indeed, water-based. The cap is a beautiful sky blue
colour that matches the colour of the water droplet. Perfect colour for
something that is water-based, eh? But it’s also so fun and bright! The cap
closes very tightly, no need to worry about the polish drying up too soon.
Ingredients: vitamin E for nourishment. 3-free (DBP,
formaldehyde, toluene). Yup, this ingredients list certainly differs from the
standard nail polish one. No acetates, and water is the main ingredient. The
scent is, as expected, quite different from all other nail polishes because it
does not contain the standard solvents. But I don’t like it’s scent, it smells
musty and mouldy. Not very nice at all. Honestly, I prefer the smell of
acetone, as harsh as it is. The expiration date is only 6 months after opening,
since it doesn’t contain the typical solvents that also act as preservers;
water is a rubbish preserver, as is obvious.
Okay, this is one weird brush. I have literally never seen a
brush like this. It’s tiny! Like, real tiny. But it’s also a flat brush that
has a rounded tip. Quite puzzling... why make a flat brush so small?? Anyways,
there’s no fraying and it does look precise. It picks up a whole bunch of nail
polish, waaay too much actually. So absolutely tap off the excess as this
formula... oh you’ll see why it’s problematic. The brush does apply polish as
evenly as possible, but the formula does make that moot to a point. And it is
quite precise; I had no issues painting the sides of my nails. In fact, the
polish looked quite well-applied, but I did need to use a lot of brushstrokes,
much more than I usually need to. And this can mess up the polish, naturally.
This is exactly why nail polish brushes are usually wide and/or large! Hrmph.
Well, definitely not my favourite type of brush...
Colour: okay, I admit I like this colour. I was a bit skeptical
at first, I thought it may be too light and I thought it would wash me out, but
it’s actually a pretty colour! It’s a very light milky pinkish white. It’s not
quite white and not quite pink, but there is a definite pink undertone. Combined
with how milky it looks on nails, this reminds me of strawberry yogurt! Yum! Or
strawberry milk – equally yum! It’s also a very elegant colour, just a bit
lighter than my skin, so it enhances my skintone instead of washing it out. Very
pretty!
The formula is gelly but quite watery and thin. I know, that
makes sense because this is, after all, a water-based nail polish. It is very
easy to use, though. The first coat applies perfectly evenly, which is awesome,
but the second coat was much more uneven for some reason. It also feels so
rubbery after the water evaporates... like, even throughout the next day. And
they take literally forever to dry, and not even my trusty drying drops can dry
it faster. Probably because it’s not acetone-based so they don’t work... great.
So... one coat is totally sheer. Like, it looks like I
applied a top coat. I thought it would be more... pink? I guess? But it’s an
even, nice coat so I guess I don’t mind. And it feels super light. But let’s
still see how it looks with two coats, because I’m not going for three, I’m too
afraid of what it’ll be like to remove so I don’t want too many coats. So, with
two coats it looks milky. I love a good milky finish! It’s not even close to
being opaque, as I can clearly see my nails underneath, but the colour is much
better now. However, it has massive problems with being uneven with two coats;
it’s like it can only work properly with one coat, but one coat is far too
sheer. I really don’t know what’s happening.
All I know is that a few nails are
completely ruined because they got scratched up a few hours after applying the
polish, after I thought they’d set. Clearly not. Honestly, I hate how rubbery
and thick it feels. And it’s hard to make nails equally opaque with two coats;
you can clearly see how some nails are more opaque than the others on the
pictures. The texture is highly glossy, almost gelly glossy, which is nice with
this pale milky colour.
Longevity is terrible, to put it mildly. It's horrible
how one nail became horribly grooved because it didn’t set properly... well,
it’s not the only nail that suffered some damage because the formula stays so
damn rubbery. Besides that, it doesn’t really get too scratched up, but it has
absolutely terrible issues with chipping, because it started chipping as soon
as day 2. And it got much worse with each day. In the end, I didn’t even wait
until I had washed my hair, I removed the nail polish before that because I was
just so sick of it by that point. Also, it peeled off on day 2 on my thumb,
where it was so deeply grooved. Nice...
Speaking of the removal, it’s... a hassle. And it damaged my
nails severely. I don’t know whether it’s the formula itself, which is
water-based (and water is not a friend to nails), or whether it was the removal
process that was so damaging, but either way, my nails are very, very brittle
and dry now. And I still have one more nail polish to wear before I shorten my
nails and give them some rest so... that’s just fantastic. I don’t have a
water-based nail polish remover (why would I anyways??), so I had to, well, use
water to remove the nail polish. I soaked my nails in hot water for roughly 10
minutes to allow the polish to soak up the water and come off the nails more
easily. In some nails it peeled right off, no issues, but on some nails I had
to literally scrape it off my nails. You can imagine that that is pretty much
the worst thing you can do to your nails. And peeling polish off in general is
ill-advised because you end up peeling not just the polish, but also the top
layer of your nails. This explains all the damage – and then also them
necessarily being waterlogged in order to remove the polish... yeah, rubbish
combo. It’s like I hit the jackpot but in the worst possible way. Terrible all
the way.
All in all, I don’t even know what to say... it’s just a hot
mess however you look at it. There’s few good things I can say about it, but a
ton of negative ones. Literally, the only good things are the colour and how
nice it looks with one coat. Okay, the brush isn’t bad per se, but it is way
too small for me. But the formula is rubbish, the longevity is rubbish and the
removal is even more rubbish. Let’s go over it one by one. The formula is goopy
and thick, and feels rubbery the whole time, even after it has totally dried.
This segues nicely into how bad the longevity is because at least part of that
is due to the rubbery formula. It becomes very damaged within 24 hours, and it
continues to chip until you remove it. And removing it is the worst part of it
all because you have to literally peel off the polish from your nails because
standard nail polish remover won’t do a thing to it! And you know why? Because
it’s water, not acetone-based! So an acetate-based remover (like most are, even
if it’s not acetone it’s still ethyl acetate) won’t be able to dissolve it
because similar dissolves in similar, remember? And this peeling causes
tremendous damage to the nails, leaving them dry, brittle and with many splits
in the nail bed. Good luck using any other glossy nail polish after this one!
It’s horse manure, shall we say? To stay polite. I hate it. No other way to
explain it... I just hate it. And this will more than likely be the only time I
wear it because I’m not about to go buy a water-based remover just for it and
besides, its shelf life is only 6 months. Honestly? Good riddance! The only
reason why I’m not giving it a 1 is because of the nicely sheer finish with one
coat, the brush and the colour being very pretty. But everything else is *bleep*
. There. No, no recommendation. Not now, not later, not ever.
