The second brush, and the first Misslyn product for today!
This is the Misslyn Shade & Blend Eyeshadow Brush!
One of the last items I ever bought from Misslyn! The brand
seems to be in some kind of trouble, there haven’t been many released products
recently, and this is likely why Müller decided to cut their losses and just
remove the brand. It’s no good to keep products that are several years old at
this point, so they put them on sale. To me, this was the perfect time to grab
a few more interesting products! I am a notorious makeup brush collector, so of
course I would buy an eyeshadow brush! But how good is the brush? Well, let’s
see!
Packaging: the brush came in a nice plastic bag that would
be a good place to keep it stored... but I’m dumb so I threw it away. I love
the light blue/blue starburst pattern inside the bag, it’s really fun!
Information about the brush is in the back. The bag keeps the brush safe during
transport as it’s pretty tight.
The brush itself is very pretty! It’s got a metallic silver
and magenta colour that is quite cute! I love how the colours transition into
one another at both ends. The only detail is the Misslyn logo, but it wipes off
after a couple of uses. The handle and ferrule share this metallic, colourful
design, but somehow, this doesn’t make the brush into a fingerprint magnet. The
ferrule is concealed; you have to look closely to see where it begins. The
brush as a whole is extremely lightweight, which makes it more comfortable to
use. The brush head is white with lovely pink tips, to tie it together to the
design of the body. Everything feels like it’s built fairly well.
The hairs are synthetic. They aren’t very shiny, but they do
look a bit cheap. I think it’s because they’re slightly crimped. But they are
cut perfectly evenly, which is good. There isn’t really any fraying, and
there’s also no fall-out. The hairs are ultra soft! My god, do they feel like
the softest plush on skin! And it doesn’t matter whether I’m swiping, swirling
or tapping, it stays this wondrously soft all the same! Omg, this is sooo
magnificently soft, wow! This makes it good for even the most sensitive of
eyes. As for the shape, it’s a bit odd tbh. Like, it’s not quite fluffy enough
to be a dedicated blending brush, but it’s way too large to be a good shader
brush. It’s stuck in this middle, where its only real purpose could be to apply
neutral colours all over the eyelid. Anything darker and it will look muddy. I
mostly use it to apply nude colours to prep my eyelids and to blend.
And it’s actually awesome for applying neutral colours
across the entire eyelid! I just swirl around the pan and then dust the
eyeshadow across my eyelid and that’s it! But it’s not good if you want to
apply any of the more intense colours; it picks up such a small amount of
pigment that it ends up being very sheer, like a subtle wash of colour instead
of being actually intense. See what I meant by it being too fluffy to be used
to apply colours?? I need to go back to the pan over and over again just to get
the eyeshadow to look slightly intense... just imagine how many times I’d need
to go back if I wanted a very intense look! And it’s not the eyeshadow’s fault,
as it applies very intensely with other brushes. Like, I guess it would be nice
if I was going for a “no makeup” makeup look... but I really prefer more
colour. At least it blends pretty well; maybe not quite as well as true
blending brushes, but it’s more than decent at it. This kind of “adequate at
both, but not very good at either” result is exactly what happens when you try
to make a brush that is an all-in-one...
It is very easy to wash, though. It doesn’t absorb shampoo
so it’s easy to rinse it out. It keeps its shape and there’s no fall-out or
fraying.
In conclusion, not the worst brush, not even close, but it
does have some problems. Mostly stemming from the fact that Misslyn wanted to
make a brush that could both apply pigments very well and blend very well, when
the two require quite different shapes. It picks up a small amount of pigment,
but it does apply it very evenly. It’s also not bad at blending. See? Mid at
both. But I did find a good use for it: applying neutral eyeshadows across the
entire eyelid! I usually use this brush to apply nude, or very light, colours
to my eyelid as a form of prepping the eyelid for darker tones. And it’s
actually very good at this... shame it’s pretty much the only thing it’s good
at. Don’t even try to apply dark tones with this brush as it will look muddy. But
I do like how well it applies light beige/light cream etc, colours. But since
it’s so mid at both of its jobs (shading and blending), I won’t be recommending
it... it may be cute, but there are much better brushes for either of the two
functions.
