I Heart Revolution Triple Chocolate Dipped Mascara Review

Let's take a look at the I ❤ Revolution Triple Chocolate Dipped Mascara

I am a huge chocolate hmm... lover? Yeah, let’s put it like that, haha! So, when I saw this mascara that had cocoa extract and, supposedly, a chocolate scent, I knew I had to try it. I managed to grab it while it was on sale so I felt even better about it! Now, I honestly was planning to stick with the L’Oréal fibre mascara I had, and ordering different mascaras wasn’t part of the plan. But this is an exception, since, come on, it’s a chocolate mascara! So, let’s see if it’s any good!

Packaging: quite simple but very thick. It’s just a black plastic tube with metallic magenta text and dripping chocolate print. The metallic magenta on black background isn’t the best choice; it’s quite difficult to read what it says. I really like the dripping chocolate print that goes perfectly with all the other products that are part of the Chocolate collection. The cap can be closed very securely. In general, I like this type of packaging for a mascara even though it’s nothing fancy because it’s stable; quite a lot of mascaras have these fancy shapes that makes it impossible for them to stand upright. This, on the other hand, is a very simple, but practical design.

Ingredients: glycerine, lactobacillus/Arundinaria gigantea ferment filtrate (basically, lactic acid), cocoa (Theobroma cacao) seed butter, caffeine, peptides (myristoyl pentapeptide-17, biotinoyl tripeptide-1 [biotin/vitamin B7]) for nourishment. Unfortunately, there are parabens in this mascara, namely, methylparaben and propylparaben. I really like the ingredient list, even if the nourishing ingredients are all located quite far down the list. I really like the addition of caffeine, it makes lashes look wide awake! And biotin helped make my lashes denser and longer, so this mascara does have some growing effects! There's also apigenin, which has some anti-inflammatory and healing properties. The scent is unbelievable; it really does smell like chocolate, specifically, dark chocolate or cocoa! I was blown away by this scent because I was expecting that typical chemical mascara smell, but instead, it smells like my favourite food! Yummy! The expiration date is 6 months after opening.

This is a jet black mascara, but I wouldn’t blame you for assuming it would be dark brown like cocoa. The pigmentation is extremely intense, and it truly is pitch black.

The formula of this mascara is much more watery than dry when it’s first opened. After two or three months it starts to dry and then the formula becomes ideal to use! At the start it is somewhat clunky to use, partly because of the applicator (I will come to that in a moment), partly because of the watery formula. Curiously, even though it’s watery it’s still quite thick so it doesn't drip anywhere. Due to the formula I noticed that my lashes were a bit clumped together in places, which was quite difficult to fix.

Also, there was quite a lot of smudging before it set, thankfully, it sets very quickly. But it still is a problem that there’s so much smudging on the eyelids. So, that was a hassle and a bit of a disappointment. But, as it became drier, it also became much easier to use! The formula was drier so there wasn’t any smudging at all and it now only very rarely clumped together lashes. And, best of all, there was no negative effect on the appearance, as it still looked pretty much the same as when it was freshly opened!

I would advise you to wait a month before using it regularly if the watery formula bothers you.

The effect of this formula, as marketed, is “volumising mascara”, and that’s precisely what it is, and then some! The volume I get with this mascara is out of this world, so thick and dark at the base of the lashes! And even though this is a volumising mascara, it also lengthens lashes quite nicely! Of course, a lengthening mascara would do a better job, but this isn’t bad at all, especially given the design of the wand. I can easily make my lashes look super dense and dark with two coats, especially if the formula has already become drier.

I have to admit, despite my initial disappointment with this mascara, the effect it gives to my lashes has become a favourite of mine. I just love it so much!

As for how comfortable it is, it’s very comfortable to wear. It’s almost feather-light on lashes, so much that I forget that I even applied it! It is also a super long-lasting mascara that doesn’t seem to cause my eyelashes to droop even after hours of wearing it. That said, I never had droopy eyelashes anyways; despite their long length, they always manage to stay curled (without even curling them with a curler). Also, as I mentioned before, this mascara seems to nourish eyelashes so that they naturally become thicker and fall out less often.

This isn’t a fibre/tube mascara so you might think that would be difficult to remove, but nope! It’s really easy to remove even if you only use micellar water, never mind if you use a specialised cleanser! And that’s a great thing if you have sensitive or dry eyes, like I do. Less rubbing to remove it = less irritations and dryness.

And now the wand. Boy, the wand! Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a terrible wand, per se, but it can be awkward to use. This is an oversized silicone fluffy, dense-bristled wand that is perfect for adding a serious amount of volume to lashes. Indeed, the official description: “ ... this volumising, silicone brush gives lashes an ultra-volumised effect.” Is absolutely true. But, this extreme density of bristles and the huge size especially, come with some caveats. Sure, it’s great to have so many densely-packed bristles but that leads to the wand clumping lashes together because it cannot fan them out properly. And such a huge size is good, except when it ends up smudging a lot because you just cannot be very precise with such a huge wand.

Of course, once the formula starts to dry, these points become more or less moot and then even the huge size of the wand isn’t problematic. Despite the large size and dense bristles, it can easily get to the corners of eyes and apply mascara evenly there. And it picks up a ton of pigment from the tube, so I always tap off the excess before applying it. Plus, it’s super soft, great for sensitive eyes!

In conclusion: I have fallen in love with this mascara in the end. At first, I was disappointed by it; primarily because of the huge wand that ends up smudging my eyes and clumps lashes together, which then necessitated combing them with an eyelash comb just to un-clump them. And I wasn’t the biggest fan of the watery formula even though I prefer my mascaras to be a bit more watery than very dry. But as the formula started to dry I started to love this mascara a lot more; suddenly, the huge wand wasn’t a problem and it was easy as 1-2-3 to get my lashes to be super voluminous without any clumping or smudging. I looove the volume this mascara gives, it is so intense and gorgeous! And the lengthening isn’t too shabby either! I usually apply two coats but even a single coat is enough to give serious volume! And, thanks to the peptides and other nourishing ingredients, this mascara helps lashes grow stronger, denser and fall out less often. I saw a visible improvement to the state of my lashes while using this mascara! Plus, it smells like chocolate, who could dislike that? What started as a disappointment turned into love; I ended up loving it so much that I have pretty much decided to make this my go-to mascara. So I will recommend it with a note that it becomes much better a month or two into its use. So, stick around with it!
