Guilia Beauty Powder Brush 101 Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - August 29, 2024

What a large, fluffy brush! This is the Guilia Beauty Powder Brush 101!

The Guilia Beauty (or InCase of Beauty, it’s hard to know exactly because there’s little information available online) brand was in Müller for but a fleeting moment in time, with a few brushes. Since they were quite affordable, I wanted to try them out, to see how good the quality is if the price is so low. A powder brush is something I always need, since I use a lot of setting powder, so I went and bought this brush. It was one of the last remaining ones, so I quickly grabbed it before anybody else could take it from me... there, now that I have it, let’s see how good it actually is! You never know, it might just be awesome!

Packaging: the brush came attached to a piece of cardboard that had a nice palm leaf print. I like the monochrome and gold colours, they are very modern! There’s information about the brush in the back. The brush was attached using a plastic tie, so it was really secure, and the brush head was protected with a plastic shield. So no tampering with it! Nice! Pretty simple overall, but it’s hygienic.

The brush itself has a very simple, if rustic, design. The handle is wooden, it feels robust and dense. I have no idea what kind of wood this is, maybe beech? In any case, it feels nice to hold. The ferrule is pale rose gold and has a frosted metal finish; it also feels grainy to touch. The brush head is massive, as powder brushes should be. The shape is classic, just a fluffy, slightly flared shape that should ensure even application of pigment. If could be larger and fluffier, but this is okay. The hairs look almost like natural hair; they are light beige with rich brown tips. This is a great combo with the slightly yellowish handle, and it’s all very rustic! I like the design very much, it doesn’t look like it cost so little, that’s for sure.

The hairs are synthetic. However, they don’t look cheap or poorly made. They are not shiny and are cut perfectly evenly; also, there’s no fraying or fall-out, although the hairs do seem to be slightly crimped. But they still look quite luxe, and they feel luxe, too! They are super soft! But they also feel kinda dense, maybe a bit too dense, actually. Still, they feel soft and wonderful when I use a swirling or swiping motion, only feeling a bit more prickly when I tap. Wow... I never expected them to be this soft!

This brush applies compact powders pretty decently, but it has some issues. It picks up enough pigment, at least, enough for me, and it does apply it evenly, but it just doesn’t apply it like I would want. See, it applies it thickly, instead of making it diffused across the entire face. This means that I have to go back to the pan to apply it to each part of my face individually. This isn’t a huge problem, but it is slightly annoying. However, it does apply a really rich layer, which is awesome. And it blends very nicely – too nicely, even! It definitely can blend powders easily, but it can also overblend quite easily. I have to be careful how I blend with this brush to avoid having uneven patches where the foundation and concealer have been blended out too much. Still, I have to applaud how well it applies powders!

I fully expected this brush to be hard to wash and that it would absorb shampoo but it doesn’t. It’s actually super easy to wash, which was a nice surprise! It’s really easy to rinse out product residue from the brush. It also retains its shape after a wash, although there’s some fall-out. No fraying, though. Nice!

All in all, a more than decent powder brush, and for a very affordable price! There’s plenty of good to be found here: the hairs are super soft and look quite high quality, the brush head is fluffy and it applies a thick layer of powder. Now, it is a bit too dense; it applies powders thickly, but it doesn’t disperse it across the face like it should. It is good at blending, but it also overblends too easily, leading to uneven patches in the foundation underneath. It’s still pretty easy to use and gives me more than decent results – just don’t try to use it to apply any kind of undereye powder, it is way too large and fluffy for that! One thing to note is that while it is pretty easy to wash, it has some fall-out after a wash. This is really not good. But, look, did I ever expect this random cheap brush from an unknown (to me) company to be this good? No, not ever, but that’s the beauty of cosmetics, sometimes you find affordable products that are still very, very good. Not exactly excellent given the problems I described, but still very good. However, these issues add up and it’s why I won’t give this brush a recommendation in the end. It was very close, though!
