Trend it Up Malibu Vibes Nail Polish [040] Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - September 08, 2023

The last of the Malibu Vibes nail polishes I bought; this is the Trend It Up Malibu Vibes Nail Polish, shade 040.

There were four shades to choose from. I have three now. I couldn’t decide whether to get the final shade, a light minty green, but I am not too big on minty nail polishes anyways, so I ended up skipping that particular colour. Instead, I got this lovely pastel yellow! Bright and cheerful! Truth be told, I have been searching for good yellow nail polishes for the longest time, especially for mustard yellow ones. But this, too, was a colour I knew I wanted to have, to kinda round out my yellow nail polish collection. So, with those other two Malibu Vibes polishes, how does this one compare to them? Is it as good? Let’s see!

Packaging: small clear glass bottle that is rectangular. It’s quite lightweight! The cap is white, which is so lovely with the pastel yellow. There’s a very pretty hibiscus print on the bottle. But get this, the text is white... on a pastel yellow nail polish. While that is a good combination, very nice and soothing, it is not what you want when legibility is the main concern. It’s barely legible. I know that black would look too dark on the pastel yellow, but white isn’t the way to go.

Ingredients: nothing nourishing, and no harmful ingredients (DBP, formaldehyde,  toluene). The scent is like most nail polishes, although it is very strong, like really strong. The expiration date is 24 months after opening.

Colour: a very cute and cheery pastel yellow. Perfect for spring, even more perfect for Easter! It’s such an adorable, girly colour that is perfect if you seek cuteness but don’t want pink. This colours really cheers you up when you see it! Although it looks good on pale skin, I reckon it would look amazing on dark skin; it would really pop and just be breathtakingly vibrant! It’s still vibrant and quite intense as is, but it just kinda looks odd on pale skin. Idk. I still like it very much! Although it isn’t a very summery colour, and Malibu Vibes was like a summery limited edition. Hmm. Anyways, don’t call it piss yellow! This is a pale daffodil yellow!

Brush: a very large flat brush. It’s big enough for the largest of nails. This brush picks up so much polish, enough for a few nails at least. So be sure to tap off the excess! While this brush does spread the polish evenly (or as evenly as it can, given that the formula is a bit uneven by nature), it is somewhat frayed. The other two polishes had brushes that were in perfect condition, but this one is slightly damaged which makes it a smidge more difficult to use than the other two.

The formula is just as creamy and wonderful as with the other two shades! It’s definitely milky and quite easy to use, as it is not runny. However, compared to the other two shades, this one is noticeably uneven with one coat. The other two looked very even with one coat, whereas this one looks sloppy and uneven, no matter how hard you try to make it even. One coat is about 70% opaque, a bit more than the other two shades, but the uneven finish ruins it, so I really wouldn’t keep it at just one coat. With two coats it is much more even, almost perfectly even. You also get the true colour of this nail polish with two coats, and 100% opacity

It doesn’t even look too thick with two coats; in fact, it feels relatively thin on nails, despite being so rich and creamy! I don’t know why this shade is so much more uneven and a bit harder to work with, compared to the other two, but it’s a shame. The texture is matte, somewhat chalky, even. But ever so slightly more shiny than the other two. I really like this finish, especially on this colour! It’s so cute!

Longevity was pretty good, but probably the worst of the Malibu Vibes polishes. There was a small chip on the second day. Thankfully that was mostly it, until I went to wash my turtle’s terrarium. I still haven’t found a nail polish that can withstand the chemicals I use during that. So this one, too, broke off in pieces, leaving it in a sorry state afterwards. And a hair wash the next day did not help matters. It didn’t make things much worse, either, somehow. This nail polish doesn’t get scratched up at all, or if it did, the grainy texture of the surface concealed it. Besides the small chip on day 2, it continued to chip off small flakes here and there. However, it still looked very good before I had to wash the terrarium. Not as good as the other two Malibu Vibes, though.

Removal: pretty difficult, actually. That is par for the course for Malibu Vibes nail polishes, it seems. The other two were hard to remove, too. However, this one seems to be the most difficult to remove, if by a slight margin. I needed to rub a lot to even start breaking through it, with even more rubbing necessary to fully remove it. This, of course, is not the best thing for the health of the nail beds. Quite annoying! I thought it would leave a slight yellow stain, being a yellow nail polish and all, but it didn’t! At least, it seems like it did not.

In conclusion, another good pastel nail polish. Although not as good as the other two Malibu Vibes polishes. Yes, the colour is beautiful, a cheery pastel yellow sure to brighten your day. And yes, the formula is wonderfully creamy and easy to use. But it’s also very uneven with one coat and it is slightly harder to work with compared to the other two. Its longevity is not as good as the other two, either. It chips sooner and when it does start chipping it can get very bad. At least it isn’t easily scratched, so you’ll keep the matte finish until you decide to remove the polish. So it’s, on the whole, worse than the other two Malibu Vibes. But it’s still quite a good nail polish, it’s just a damn shame that it was part of a limited edition. It can be difficult to find such pastel yellow nail polishes, especially matte ones, so I am thankful that this one is quite good. Because of that, I will recommend it.
