Notino Wooden Collection Powder Brush Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - September 20, 2023

Now, the other brush, hopefully a better one! This is the Notino Wooden Collection Powder Brush!

I mainly bought this brush because it looked interesting and because it had a huge discount. Like, unbelievably huge! You always need to have a good powder brush to use with setting powders, and this one has a very distinctive shape that made me curious as to how well it could perform as a powder brush. Brushes that are shaped like this are usually highlighter brushes, not powder brushes. Let’s see how good this curious brush really is!

Packaging: it came in cardboard packaging that felt like it was 100% recycled. It had that scratchy, recycled paper feel. The brown colour of the packaging suits the wooden brush perfectly, and the gold text is the perfect choice. The brush was kept without any protective sleeve inside, which is alright, the outer packaging is sturdy enough and it doesn’t rattle around the inside too much anyways.

The brush itself is gorgeous in that retro, cottagecore type of aesthetic. I love the dark brown wooden handle (real wood btw!); it feels sturdy but extremely light, which is excellent given that it is, in fact, wood! It just looks so rustic and nice! The engraved Notino logo only adds to the rustic chic! You might be wondering where the ferrule is. Well, it is concealed within the handle. Good choice, in my opinion, as the brush looks even more rustic without an obvious ferrule. I love the drastic transition from hairs straight to wood. The hairs look like real hair, but they are actually synthetic. They have that multicoloured dark brown look that looks rustic but kinda expensive at the same time. I love when brush hairs look like this! In fact, I love the entire design philosophy they used with this brush, it’s definitely one of the more unique brushes in my collection!

The hairs are sooo soft! Omg, like, it’s soft like the softest fur! They definitely feel very high quality, and they look so, too. They are pretty shiny, though. No big deal. The hairs are cut perfectly evenly, with not a single hair out of place! This brush stays super soft no matter what kind of motion you use, stippling, brushing, swirling... etc. Although it is just a tad more prickly when you stipple. Not gonna lie, I totally forgot that this is a powder brush! The shape of the brush head is not really what you’d expect from a powder brush so I assumed it is a highlighter brush.

It’s got a tapered tip, which brushes that need to be precise (such as highlighter brushes) often have, whereas brushes for large areas (such as powder brushes) tend to be more fluffy. Yeah, it’s definitely not big enough at the tip to be used with setting powders. However, it is superb for all kinds of pigments, be it blushes, contouring, or even highlighters! Yep, it’s actually amazing for highlighting! Because it’s got such a pointed tip it is super precise, allowing you to apply pigment right where you want to, which is crucial for contouring and highlighters.

The brush picks up a ludicrous amount of pigment, like, I had so much highlighter powder on it from just lightly tapping the pan that I ended up glowing! Supposedly, it has low product absorption. I would agree, as the majority of highlighter stayed on the hairs, not inside them. And, as I said, it’s amazingly precise, so that combo makes for a professional, rich finish every time! It’s extremely easy to use, thanks to both the shape and size of the brush head and how well it performs!

It applies such a rich, even layer that it’s amazing! And that’s all from only lightly tapping the pan, imagine how intense the pigment would be if you actually packed on the pigment! It also blends like a champ! But it doesn’t overblend easily, so you can carefully blend to your heart’s desire without worrying it will be too blended out. After the Master Collection brush, which was a pain to use, this one is such a refreshment! It feels so good to know that I picked a good, no, a great brush!

Washing: oh amazingly easy to wash! Absolutely no absorption of shampoo and it only takes a bit of water to fully rinse it out. It also doesn’t drain water into the ferrule, so it’s easy to dry it, even if it does take some while because it is large. And it’s just as soft after a wash as when I first opened it, with no fraying or fall-out either! Superb!

All in all, man this is such a fantastic brush! Compared to the “Master Collection”, the Wooden Collection is vastly superior, at least from what I’ve experienced so far. I love everything about this brush! The wooden handle is large and robust yet still very lightweight and it looks so rustic and almost cottagecore! Old-timey! I feel like the concealed ferrule adds to this rustic aesthetic. It does become a bit uncomfortably moist when you wash it though – that’s real wood for ya! The hairs are synthetic but feel as soft as real fur; they are high-quality, with absolutely no fraying or fall-out or any other defects. I love how soft the hairs feel on my skin! This is definitely a soft enough brush for sensitive skin. But it’s not just the appearance that is excellent – the performance is, too! It picks up a ton of powder but it keeps it mostly on the surface so that there is minimal product waste. This means that you’ll always get an intense, rich layer of powder with this brush, no matter whether it’s compact powder, bronzer or blush! It makes setting powder so even and thick across the entire face, no blotchiness with this brush! And it also blends like a champ! In only a few seconds everything is perfectly blended out for an almost professional result! So you see just how fun and pleasant this brush is to use; I actually felt sad when I went to wash it and go on to another powder brush! It’s just that good! And at the discount I got it at? It’s close to perfection! So I will highly recommend you check out this brush – it is beyond amazing! I reckon it would even be worth it at full price!
