Catrice The Great Christmas Advent Calendar Glitter Nail Foils Review
By Maychiri's Thoughts - December 21, 2024
Glitter nail foils, eh? I was excited for these initially,
before I read how to use them. See, I thought that they aren’t too harsh on the
nails, but, seeing the usage described, I am really not sure I can use this on
my sensitive nails. And, for once, I will not be risking anything just to
review this; I have to make sure my nails are in good condition for the 3 nail
polishes in this calendar. I will give a short rundown of what these foils look
like, though.
Packaging: nothing special, just a piece of cardboard with
another piece of plastic foil on top of it that houses the nail foils. No
details at all, just a purple piece of cardboard. Information about the foils
is in the back, in light pink text, which is a great colour with the purple. Oh,
also, the foils came with a protective plastic sheath, but overall, it’s really
scraping the bottom of the barrel in terms of effort. Meh.
Okay, so, there are 14 foils provided, which gives you some
leeway in case you mess things up. They vary in sizes so that you have a
complete set for both hands. And I am really surprised that most of these
actually fit my nails! I have very small nails, so false nails and everything
like that is usually way too big for me. But here, only the top 4 stickers are
too large. Of course, the length doesn’t matter – it’s going to be filed down
anyways, it’s moreso the fact that they are too wide. My nail beds are simply
not that large. And if they are too wide, they are unusable. So if you have
average-size nails, these are probably going to fit just fine.
The foils look super shimmery golden in the packaging, but
they are actually not nearly as glittery once you peel them off. Since they
have a rubbery clear base, the glitter becomes scattered after you try to stick
this onto a nail. The result is patchy, uneven gold shimmer, which isn’t
selling the expensiveness of the calendar. The foils feel very thick and
rubbery, although they are easy to peel off the plastic foil. They stick very
well to nails, from what I tried, at least. Too well, in fact, as they feel
very aggressive on the nails if you try to peel them off. And I had painted
nails! Imagine how aggressive that would be on a bare nail! Of course, you have
to be super precise how you stick them on because of this, unless you want to
damage your nail by repeatedly peeling off this thing...
So, how are these foils supposed to be used? Well, you can
use them on either bare nails or on a base coat. You then select a foil that is
of suitable width (don’t worry about the length), and you carefully stick it
onto the nail and press down so that the adhesive forms a tight bond. Very
simple, right? Well, this is where the tricky part comes; after sticking them
on, the foils will be massively too long, so you have to use a file to shorten
them and shape them to your pleasing. This takes a lot of time and,
necessarily, requires you to shorten your natural nail underneath a little bit.
Then you leave the foils on, and, when you wish to remove them, you have to
peel. them. off. Yeah, that is precisely the reason why I am not going to be
using these stickers. I tested one out for a brief moment on one of my polished
nails and the adhesive seemed to really stick to the nail, so much that peeling
the foil off felt very aggressive on my nail. And, of course, peeling stuff off
your nails is an express ticket to damaging your nails; that is, like, the one
thing you should never do as it peels off the top layer of keratin unevenly,
leading to dryness, brittleness and weak nails. And my nails are already quite
sensitive and prone to drying, thanks to whatever the psoriasis kind of thing I
have on my palms. So no, I will not be risking my whole nail. Were it just the
tip, maybe, but the entire nail bed? Yeah, no.
Look, obviously, this means I cannot actually review this,
as I did not use them. But, honestly, they are a gimmick, and I highly doubt
they would survive hair washes or washing the dishes or anything that requires
manual labour. And they don’t even look that sparkly on nails! They are way too
see-through, so it looks more patchy gold shimmery than truly like your nails
are dipped in gold dust. Useless. I don’t feel good about skipping this, but it
was necessary.
Rating: 2/10 I guess?
