Avon True Colour Calming Effects Mattifying Foundation [Light Nude] Review
By Maychiri's Thoughts - December 22, 2023
Okay, so for the first of two reviews today, I have the Avon
True Colour Calming Effects Mattifying Foundation, in the shade Light Nude.
This foundation was bought along with a lip stain as part of
my monthly Avon order, back in July 2021. The order that month was light on
stuff because I just didn’t have many things in the catalogue that interested
me that much. I had already tried a tester version of this foundation before,
but I ordered the lightest shade, which ended up being a bit too pink. So I
thought that a darker and yellower shade would fit my skintone better. Was I
right? Well, let’s see...
Packaging: a very simple black cardboard packaging with silver text. Avon products usually have this kind of simple packaging, so I am not surprised by it. There's a lot of text all over the cardboard packaging.
The bottle itself is nothing too special, just a clear glass bottle
with a black pump and cap. The text is black so it’s easy to read. The cap fits
very securely so it won’t slide off on its own. The pump is alright, although it
doesn’t deposit a lot of product per pump press. I wish it would deposit more
product, but this way it’s more precise, so I guess I understand why they made
it like this. As it’s clear glass, you can quickly swatch the product without
opening it.
Ingredients: as it’s a calming foundation, there are a lot
of nourishing and hydrating ingredients: glycerin, vitamin E, vitamin A, Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) extract, German chamomile (Chamomilla recutita/Matricaria chamomilla) flower extract and urea.
Unfortunately, there are parabens in this foundation, but it’s just
methylparaben. The scent is so nice; it’s pleasant, relaxing and not intense at
all, it smells kind of like freshly washed laundry. The expiration date is 24
months after opening.

Swatch on clean skin, without any primer |
Pigmentation is nice, although the coverage isn’t as high as
I would prefer it to be; the coverage is light to perhaps medium, so it doesn’t
really hide acne all that well. Even
after 2 layers, pimples were still visible. Nonetheless, it makes my skin look
really healthy, so I guess I can live with having my pimples be visible.
The
colour of this shade is nude; light, but not pale, with a neutral undertone, and
it’s a bit too dark for my skin. I think that the undertone matches really well
because it’s not at all pink. Because it’s just one shade too dark, it’s easily
fixed with concealer or setting powder, and I must say that I rather like the
way it looks on my skin; it’s barely noticeable that it’s too dark. Still, if
it were a shade lighter it might’ve been the perfect foundation, such a shame.
The formula is thick; it is liquid but due to the thickness
it is not runny. It’s super easy to apply; it also blends like a dream, leaving
no obvious streaks or brush marks. I usually use a flat foundation brush to
apply liquid foundations and this foundation is perfect to use with those
brushes. Even though it sets quickly when you apply it you still have plenty of
time to apply it before it starts to dry when you squeeze it out of the bottle.
The texture is matte, but it doesn’t look dry or unnatural.
In fact, it’s almost indistinguishable from my natural skin texture, that’s how
well it blends into it! It also doesn’t make the skin look too textured, which
I have had problems with in the past. I looove how healthy and hydrated my skin
looks with this foundation! Pores aren’t terribly well concealed but they also
don’t look enlarged or grainy (like with some other foundations). This is
definitely a very light, natural foundation, and I love that, even though I
prefer very high coverage foundations.

Example of what it looks like with a full face of makeup |
In terms of performance, it seems like it’s quite
long-lasting; I didn’t notice it fading much throughout the day. Also, an
excellent thing is that it does seem to regulate how much sebum my skin is
producing (or it manages to absorb almost all of it). After 6 hours of wearing
it, my skin looks only a tiny bit more shiny, which, given my extremely oily
skin, is a miracle. Foundations usually become an oily, shiny mess after half a
day, but not this one! It’s not drying at all, which is no surprise with the
ingredients this foundation has. After a couple of days of wearing it I did not
notice any new pimples forming, so I can say that it doesn’t irritate my skin
or cause pimples.

Various looks that can be achieved with this foundation |
When I went to remove it, it was super easy to remove. Using
an oil makeup remover it was removed in a heartbeat.
All in all, I think I might be in love with this foundation, having used it for a very long time! The undertone matches exceptionally
well, so when I blend the foundation out and apply a generous amount of setting
powder to neutralise the dark tones it looks amazing. It’s like I got a very
slight tan! The skin looks so healthy and beautiful with this foundation, it
doesn’t pill or look blotchy and it blends so easily! After trying out the
tester version I wasn’t sure how the full-sized foundation would look, but it knocked
me on my butt with how great it is! I was so surprised by how well my skin
reacted to it! The only negative points are that there are parabens, that the
shade is just a smidge too dark, that coverage could be a bit better and that
there is no SPF. My skin definitely appreciates this foundation, it felt calmer and happier wearing this foundation!
Definite recommendation for anyone with oily, acne-prone skin!
Rating: 8/10
Would buy again? YES (but in a lighter shade)
