Max Factor False Lash Effect Lash & Brow Serum Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - February 18, 2023

The second of two reviews, but this one isn’t at all a bad product! This is the Max Factor False Lash Effect Lash & Brow Serum!
I had been thinking about getting this serum for the longest time, but it was just too expensive. Then something interesting happened. DM had loads of coupons during the first 24 days of December 2022, and one of them was a buy one get one free coupon for Max Factor products. Thing is, there was a technical issue that actually made the most expensive product free instead of the least expensive! So I jumped at the opportunity and bought this serum, well, actually I got it for free thanks to this “issue”! Now that I finally managed to get it, let’s see if there are any good results!

Packaging: it’s quite elegant. This is a gray matte plastic tube with a matching cap. The cap closes extremely tightly so that no air can get in and it has a sleek slanted top. The tube is stable, unlike many mascaras, which tend to fall over so easily. There is a reflective gold band where you’ll find some information about this serum (but, notably, not the ingredients list!); the gray text is legible enough, more so than the gold text. Though I will say that I like the gold/light gray colour combo that Max Factor used!

Ingredients: glycerine, panthenol/provitamin B5, arginine, apigenin, peptides (myristoyl pentapeptide-17, biotinoyl tripeptide-1), biotin, hyaluronic acid, olive (Olea europaea) oil (specifically, oleanolic acid), bamboo (Bambusa arundinacea) stem extract for nourishment. No parabens. Whew! Loads of conditioning and nourishing ingredients; the proteins/peptides help the lashes grow stronger and thicker, while the oleanolic acid, panthenol and HA hydrate them and soothe both the skin and hair shaft. It’s a very impressive ingredients list, seems very potent! The scent is not too intense; it smells like mascara, it’s got that plastic, slightly bitter scent. The expiration date is 12 months after opening.

This serum comes with a mascara wand as the applicator. This is a curved wand made of rubber. The curved shape helps curl the lashes naturally and it separates the lashes with ease so that there’s no clumping. The fibres of the wand are very short, allowing you to get all the way into the roots of the lashes to coat them from root to tip. The wand picks up a pretty good amount of serum even if you can’t tell due to the colourless nature of the serum. It then deposits the serum wonderfully evenly across each individual eyelash, from root to tip, without any clumping. I like how naturally curled my eyelashes are after applying the serum!

But there is one very bad thing with this applicator: it is horribly hard and sharp! If you aren’t careful you can literally scratch your eyelids with it! It is quite uncomfortable to use and my (already sensitive) eyelids always feel a bit irritated by the sharp, rigid, and hard wand. That’s a real shame, because otherwise, this is a phenomenal wand.

This is a colourless serum, so it looks like there’s nothing on the wand at all when, in fact, there is a lot! It’s pretty much the same thing on eyelashes, though there is a very slight whitish colour at the tips of the lashes after applying the serum. Still, you couldn’t tell there was anything on the eyelashes just by looking at them!

The formula is quite perplexing: it’s at the same time both watery and gooey, gelly. Like, you can see that it’s gooey but when you apply the serum to the lashes it just feels watery. In any case, it is a very lightweight formula that absorbs quickly into the lashes. It’s quite comfortable, too! It does feel a bit gooey and thick at the start, though.

This serum immediately offers a hydrating, soothing effect to my eyelashes. I love how much it feels hydrating, it is like a luxurious serum that deeply nourishes and conditions the lashes! There is also a very slight cooling sensation which is quite relaxing. The serum feels lightweight and therefore doesn’t weigh down the eyelashes; it’s especially comfortable after it absorbs. I can also say for certain that this serum does soothe both the skin and the lashes: my eyes were left feeling very irritated, tired, scratchy and dry after thoroughly removing eyelash glue, and after applying this serum that irritation went away after a minute or two, tops. It’s surreal just how much it calmed it down! I literally couldn’t stop prodding at my eyes because of the irritation and that irritation was gone in an instant thanks to this serum! And that’s extremely high praise what with my extremely sensitive eyes! So if it can soothe real irritations so effectively, just imagine how much it nourishes and hydrates healthy, non-irritated lashes! My eyelashes also feel great after applying the serum, it’s a very pleasant and lovely feeling! Marvellous!

I apply this serum before going to bed so that my eyelashes absorb the serum fully overnight. The following morning my eyelashes usually feel good, though they can look a bit stuck together due to the serum drying and of course, due to having sleep in my eyes. Sometimes my eyes feel slightly irritated and watery and then I get these like slimy tears forming in them, though I do feel this is actually due to the eye cream I am currently using (the eye cream from the Balea Adventskalender The Most Wonderful Time), as it only happens occasionally. I think that my eyelashes actually really like this serum.

Timelapse of results during 30 days of daily use

Speaking long-term, my eyelashes are definitely longer and fuller! I already naturally have a double row of eyelashes in certain parts, which is both a blessing and a curse, let me tell you! But with this serum my eyelashes definitely look denser, and I am pretty sure that’s because there is new growth, so there is actually more eyelashes than before. They are also much longer; whereas before they reached approximately to my browbone with mascara on, now they reach all the way up to my brows! It is like, half a millimetre of added length, which is great! It’s is also a slight problem because now I have more issues with mascara smudging my eyelids due to my eyelashes being a bit too long. The larger density is also a tiny bit of a problem only because I already have a double row of lashes, so when you add new lashes there, there’s too many lashes and that can start to irritate my eyes and feel scratchy. Fortunately, that only lasted for about a week, until the skin of my eyelids got used to the serum and new lashes. So now when I apply my usual mascara my lashes look much longer and denser, and I am finding it more and more unnecessary to apply falsies as my natural lashes are already supersized thanks to this serum! Real, visible results! Bravo!

This serum is extremely easy to remove using water. No rubbing, scrubbing, nor any harsher removers needed. Just a bit of warm water.

All in all, this is a wonderful eyelash serum! I had some reservations after reading other reviews that said they didn’t see any difference, but, for me, the difference is clearly visible! Firstly: my eyelashes are naturally long, have a slight curl to them, and are relatively dense, with some parts having a double row of eyelashes. It’s important to say this as, perhaps, short, sparse eyelashes won’t have the same results! So, with that out of the way, my eyelashes are much longer and a bit denser after 30 days of using this serum. They also seem much healthier and hold a curl better. Mascaras just look way better now than before I started using this serum. The serum is very light and comfortable on the delicate skin of the eyes and it feels hydrating and soothing as soon as you apply it. Indeed, it can soothe bad irritations effectively; my eyes were terribly irritated after removing eyelash glue and felt dry and scratchy and as soon as I applied this serum, that irritation went away! However, the applicator/wand is much too rigid and sharp and just uncomfortable to use and can cause irritations due to scratching the delicate skin of the eyelids. You really have to be careful using it. But that’s pretty much the only negative thing about this serum! The results are clearly visible, at least for my type of eyelashes, and it actually does repair and condition eyelashes. So I will gladly recommend it!

Disclaimer: I did manage to get this serum for free (through a loophole), though I tried to stay as unbiased as possible.

Disclaimer: I did not use this serum on my eyebrows, only on my eyelashes.
