Trend it Up Contour & Glide Lipliner [220] Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - October 27, 2021

First, we have the Trend It Up Contour & Glide Lip Liner in the shade 220.

If you didn’t know, Trend It Up is one of DM’s own brands, along with Alverde, S.he Colour&Style, Ebelin and Balea. They are all "dirt cheap", but that doesn’t necessarily have to be a bad thing. This shade has been discontinued.

I decided to buy this shade in particular because it looked like a very pretty light pink.

Now, the packaging is simple: black matte plastic with a light pink cap and sharpener (yes, it has a sharpener on the back end of the pencil, more on that later). The colour of the cap matches the colour of the liner itself, so it’s easy to swatch different shades just based on the colour of the cap. The retracting mechanism isn’t terribly flimsy.

In terms of ingredients, it doesn’t contain any nourishing ingredients like vitamin E or even glycerine, but it also doesn’t contain parabens. Its scent is barely noticeable, a little bit like powder. Expiration date is 24 months after opening.

This is an automatic lip liner; thus, it is incredibly precise. The pigmentation is pretty good, although super light, even on my pale skin tone. The formula is easy to apply, no tugging or pulling, and it applies pigment surprisingly evenly.

The texture is ultra-matte, and it does look very dry on the lips; indeed, it feels extremely dry, almost like powder, although it does feel a bit tacky on the inside of the lips. As such, it should come as no surprise that it does dry out lips. Additionally, after a few hours it can get so terribly dry that it starts to crack and flake, good luck fixing that mess without removing the bloody thing altogether.

On the positive side, it is quite long-lasting even after 6 hours and easy to remove using just micellar water. On the (yet another) negative side, it doesn’t last through meals or drinks all that well, but it could be worse. You will have to reapply, but only on the centre and inside the lips.

And here we come to the sharpener, finally. I must say that, in my opinion, that is the best part of this liner. The sharpener is robust and sharp enough to quickly and easily sharpen the liner. But, given its small size, cleaning it might be a bit tricky.

All in all, I am not really satisfied with the quality of this liner: even though it’s very nicely pigmented and super long-lasting, and the sharpener is excellent, the liner just leaves a lot to be desired. The worst thing is how it starts to flake, that is simply unacceptable. It feels horrible on the lips, and makes my lips feel suuuper dry. And it looks bone dry, anyways. Really not good. No, no recommendations.
