L'Oréal Paris Les Macarons Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick [838/Berry Cherie] Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - October 27, 2021

The penultimate item for this post, the L’Oréal Paris Les Macarons Ultra Matte Liquid Lipstick, in the shade 838/Berry Cherie

I have been eyeing this for quite some time before finally buying it, again in the pinkest shade I could find. To be honest, the ads sold me on this lipstick; the thought that it is both completely non-transferrable and that it smells like macarons was irresistible, so it felt like a solid choice for my first ever liquid lipstick. But did it live up to those lofty expectations? Read on to find out.

First, the packaging: it is quite elegant. It’s rectangular and clear with a cream-coloured cap and gold text. The cap fits very securely. I really like the design of the packaging; I think it looks modern and the way they formatted the text is very clean and sleek. And as you can see the colour of the lipstick inside, you don’t have to open the product to swatch it.

There are no nourishing ingredients in this lipstick but also, there are no parabens. The scent is relatively intense and incredibly sweet; it really does smell like pastry or indeed macarons! I find this scent to be absolutely delicious! The expiration date is 24 months after opening.

Pigmentation is extremely intense and bright pink. It’s beautiful, even more than what it looks like in the pictures, the camera doesn’t do it justice. The formula is very thick, so it’s completely opaque. Application is pretty easy; the formula is still liquid enough to glide across the lips no matter how thick it may seem. But as this is a liquid lipstick, if you mess up somewhere, it will be interesting to fix, to say the least. But more on how easy it is to remove later.

The texture is matte even though it looks slightly glossy on the pictures; that is because I like to apply an SPF lip balm under liquid lipsticks so as to make it at least a tiny bit easier to remove them later. And since the lip balm is very greasy and thick, it tends to make everything else look glossier than it really is. Now, this formula is very tacky/sticky, both while it is drying, and after it has dried. Like, it stays tacky until you decide to remove it, be that an hour later or 6. And that tackiness can lead to tiny parts of the lipstick falling off, at least in my case.

At least it doesn’t take a long time to dry. So, because of the tackiness and its thick formula, it’s not the most comfortable lipstick to wear.

Like most liquid lipsticks, especially of the matte variety, it’s extremely long-lasting. But I found it to be a little drying for my lips and remember that I have a thick layer of lip balm underneath, so the fact that it manages to still dry my lips out a little is not good. As expected, food/drinks do nothing to this lipstick, and it is very mask-proof. But the removal is what’s the real problem. Yes, I know that liquid lipsticks often can be a nightmare to remove even using oily removers, so I was aware of that when I went to remove this lipstick and appropriately used a combination of olive oil, Vaseline, and an oil-based makeup remover. It still took a very long time to remove, and it required quite a bit of scrubbing. The bad experience I had removing it is compounded by being left with a stain. And I hate it when that happens because stains can be nigh on impossible to remove, just like this one was. A real bummer!

The last thing I would like to talk about is the applicator; it looks nice, and it generally applies pigment really evenly, but it struggles in some places, like the cupid’s bow or the very corners of lips. Which is curious given its pointed tip. It’s still a very good applicator, nonetheless. In terms of shape, it's a unique shape that L'Oréal calls "pro-sculpt"; basically, a smaller, almost-heart-shaped reservoir-type applicator. Or similar to that, anyways.

In summary: even though I might sound like I really didn’t like it, I actually did. I do like this lipstick, but I wish I could say that I love it. Unfortunately, the tackiness and the nightmarish removal process left me feeling unhappy, but the staying power, the gorgeous shade, and how food-proof it is has improved my opinion. I am really torn; I don’t know whether to recommend it because of the few, but significant negatives. Let’s just end it like this: this is a good liquid lipstick, but there are many, many better ones, so don’t buy it, unless you really like the shades in this range, or you really like the scent.
