Cien Nail Polish [13 - Metallic Rose] Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - January 18, 2024

Ah, I will share with you but one review today. One nail polish, the simply named Cien Nail Polish, in shade 13/Metallic Rose!

I would probably never buy this myself. Not that Lidl cosmetics is necessarily horrible (their perfumes are excellent, on the contrary), but I just don’t feel like it would be particularly good. Then my mother comes one day and gives me this nail polish... okay??? Well I guess I’ll try it, then. This is one of the nail polishes that has been around for literally years, as part of their standard range. I do like the colour, to be honest, and, who knows, it might just end up being a great nail polish! So, let’s check it out!

Packaging: glass bottle that isn’t very heavy. There’s almost nothing to decorate the bottle, besides the Cien logo. There’s a sticker, but you won’t find the ingredient list there! For that, you will have to look at the display at Lidl. Annoying. But alright. The cap is black and closes so tightly that I was literally almost unable to open it the first time! No matter what, it did not want to open! I somehow managed to open it in the end, and now it is a bit easier to open, but it still closes very tightly. This is one nail polish you can be sure won’t dry out due to being left slightly open! Very basic design, but I did not expect anything too fancy anyways.

Ingredients: nothing nourishing and 3-free (DBP, formaldehyde, toluene). The scent is like most nail polishes, nothing too special in that regard. The expiration date is 36 months after opening.

Brush: a flat brush, not too large or too wide. It’s actually a fantastic brush! It picks up a large amount of pigment (tap off the excess!), which it then deposits evenly and very richly. Like, maybe even a bit too richly! It’s precise enough not to make too big of a mess on the sides of nails; it’s large enough to coat the majority of my nails with only a few swipes. This makes the whole process even easier!

Colour: oh this is a very unexpected colour! It’s like a grayish rose with a lot of silver tones thrown in to make it cool toned and, indeed, cool. The name of this shade is definitely correct, this is for sure a metallic rose! I don’t think this is a dated colour, in fact, it looks very modern! I love how it’s got a rosy sheen, not a silvery or brass one. And it’s just right in terms of how vibrant it is, because extreme vibrancy isn’t always a good thing! I feel like it being almost grayish is what makes this colour so stunning to look at!

Ooh! This is suuuper creamy! And it’s thick! But it doesn’t feel heavy. It spreads extremely easily across nails, and it almost always looks even. Marbled, yes, but even. There is some weird banding on a few nails, wonder if that’s due to the formula or due to those nails being slightly uneven? Hmm, it’s quite ugly on that one nail. This formula is much more creamy than what I usually work with, but I actually kinda like it. Also, the only other Cien nail polish I have is actually made by Wibo, while this one was made by Cosmolux. I do have to say that that’s pretty obvious in the formula; it’s not thick and goopy like Wibo nail polishes can be.

So I usually always have to apply 2 coats. Not here, though! I applied one coat and it is completely opaque and looks perfect as it is. I really didn’t want to ruin it or make it too thick by adding a second layer, so I kept it like this. It actually looks very good, except on those couple of nails where there’s banding, and on the free edges of most nails where it looks a bit like it is too thick. This texture really emphasises all the flaws, unfortunately. So all the thicker parts look even worse here. Speaking of, the texture is maybe a bit dated, but it is still pretty cool! It is very highly metallic, looking like molten metal rather than a shimmery metallic. Very shiny, very flashy and in your face. Good. But it’s also slightly swirly and marbled.

Longevity started off good, but it then began to chip pretty soon. It was day 3 when I first noticed chipping. It wasn’t very bad then... if only it stayed like this. See, the next day it chipped off the sides of a few nails, and it wasn’t just tiny chips anymore. Literally one half of my right index fingernail was chipped off! And there was some edge chipping on most nails. So that’s pretty bad... but it gets even worse. On the last day it was so damaged that it was honestly just ugly. Half chipped off on all nails, both on the sides and on the edges. A hair wash drove the final proverbial nail in the coffin, and more and more pieces started to chip off. One nail actually had half of it chip off at once!

Would two coats have helped it have better longevity? I honestly doubt it – the formula is already very thick and creamy, it would just be goopy with two coats, and usually, when it’s so thick and goopy, that’s when it chips the most. Although it’s got bad durability, this is about what I expected, honestly. I never expected it to have excellent longevity.

How nice, this nail polish is very easy to remove! I didn’t have to rub a lot to remove it completely and it doesn’t leave any stains on my nails. Metallic nail polishes can sometimes be a bit difficult to remove so it’s great that this one comes off easily!

All in all, this nail polish is, against all odds, better than I ever thought it would be. But that doesn’t mean it is absolutely fantastic. On the contrary, this is a more-or-less average quality nail polish. I do actually like the formula; I like how creamy it is without feeling goopy and how easy it is to spread across the nails. Although it does end up looking marbled, I do like how it looks. It fits in well with the metallic finish! Also, it looks kinda grainy which is fantastic with the marbled formula! The colour is very modern and fancy; a grayish rose that is sooo cool! It’s a bit cold, given all the grayish undertones, but I love it like this. What surprised me the most was that I needed only one coat to get it to look good – I absolutely believe that it would look way too thick and that it would harm its longevity. Speaking of longevity, it’s mediocre, even if it did seem like it would be excellent at the start. It chipped significantly over the course of a few days, starting with day 3. Every day, it chipped off more and more, culminating in it chipping off so badly that on one finger, literally half of it peeled off in one go. Shame. Oh well, I never expected it to be particularly amazing. But you know what, if you are pressed for money but still want a cool nail polish, this isn’t the worst option! There are much, much better ones out there, of course, but this one is alright. I will not be recommending it, though.
