Catrice Disney Villains Maleficent Nail Polish Review

By Maychiri's Thoughts - August 03, 2023

Only one thing today, but one magical, if villainous, item. This is the Catrice Disney Villains Maleficent Nail Polish, shade 010/Thorns (it's the only shade, anyways).

I lpve it when Catrice and Essence make these Disney inspired collections. I grew up watching Disney films so this kind of stuff is right up my alley! This time they decided to feature some of the villains in classic Disney stories, one of them being the evil fairy Maleficent, from Sleeping Beauty. She is not my favourite Disney villain, though I did love the first Maleficent film with Angelina Jolie, and I grew to like the character after watching it. So, this lavender nail polish is inspired by the purple accents on her robes and her purple eyeshadow; that’s all fine and all, but is it any good? Is it comparable to other Catrice nail polishes? Let’s see!

Packaging: standard Catrice nail polish packaging with two caps, one decorative and one functional. The bottle is made of clear glass and feels quite heavy and robust. The functional cap is black and ribbed, and closes extremely tightly. It’s the decorative cap that’s the prettier of the two, since it’s reflective gold with a Maleficent print on the front. It, too, closes tightly. I love the gold cap, but, thing is, it’s a magnet for fingerprints! There’s also a reflective gold Maleficent print on the bottle itself, which makes a nice contrast with the lavender purple background.

Ingredients: açaí (Euterpe oleracea) fruit oil for nourishment. No harmful ingredients (such as formaldehyde, toluene, or DBP). The scent is just like any other nail polish. The expiration date is 36 months after opening.

Colour: this is a lavender purple nail polish. It has super fine purple shimmer inside to give it an intense purple shine. It’s not really iridescent, though you can definitely see the colour changing from lavender to more intense purple. It’s a very pretty colour, and looks good on pale skin.

The brush is your standard fantastic Catrice nail polish brush: it’s a relatively large, flat brush that applies pigment incredibly evenly and is just a joy to use! It’s very precise, too! This brush picks up way more nail polish than you’d ever need on one nail, especially with such a thick looking formula (more on that in a bit). So don’t forget to tap off the excess!

The formula is lovely and just wonderful to use! It’s slightly thinner than other Catrice nail polishes, but it’s not at all runny. It feels a bit like gel nail polish, so that it doesn’t spill all over. It is easily spread and is very even, even with just one coat. It is incredibly silky and luxurious!

One coat is very sheer, and it doesn’t really look all that good with just one coat. Not because of uneven pigmentation, no, but because it is definitely meant to have two coats, at least. With two coats it is almost opaque, but not quite 100%. I really wouldn’t apply more than two coats, though, as it already looks way too thick and gelly with two coats. With 3 it would just look ridiculously thick. To be honest, I don’t like how it’s this thick yet still not totally opaque. At least it’s even. The texture is very, very glossy and shiny, almost metallic. It’s also pearly, in a way; It looks kind of swirly, marbled, if you look closely. I do like how the shine looks satin, all swirly. But in general, I am not blown away by the opacity of this polish.

Longevity is freaking incredible! Like, the only thing that caused it to chip is when I cleaned my turtle’s terrarium with harsh disinfectants on day 5. Nothing else, not a hair wash, not opening stuff with my nails, not peeling off stickers with my nails, nothing! No matter what I did it remained in perfect condition, at least in terms of damage. I did notice some bubbles forming during the 5 days that I kept this polish on my nails, but that didn’t really affect its appearance much. I honestly expected it to start to chip within 24 hours, this is ridiculously good! I have no idea how, or why, it is this amazing in terms of quality, but, there it is!

This nail polish is quite easy to remove. You don’t need to rub your nails a lot with remover to completely remove the polish. There isn’t any staining.

All in all, this nail polish far exceeded my expectations. I thought it would have mediocre longevity, and that it would start to chip in a day or two. I never expected it to be in almost pristine condition 5 days in! I say almost because there were some bubbles on the surface of the polish. No matter what I did it did not chip or get damaged in any way, until I used harsh chemicals to wash my turtle’s terrarium, but even then the damage wasn’t as severe as it usually is with other polishes. The incredible longevity aside, the colour is really quite pretty, and the brush is as usual fantastic. The formula, however, is not too pleasant to use as it looks way too thick with two coats, yet far too sheer with just one. I really dislike the way it looks, especially when you notice all the tiny bubbles. However, despite all the good things I mentioned, the thick look of this polish is way too big of a negative, so I won’t be recommending it.

Would buy again? NO (far too thick for me)
